Do conjunctions always have the same sign in them because I have venus gemini in the 6th house with a 26th degree and a mercury cancer in the 7th house with a 5th degree and they conjunct each other.

Nope ! Conjunctions (0 degrees) are the strongest aspect so they typically count them within ten degrees.

Conjunctions aren’t just having the same sign in two planets, it’s about being within a certain degree from each other.

Each sign has 30 degrees in it, so a sign in 26 degrees and the next sign in 5 degrees (has to be neighboring signs) will be conjunct :)
