Of course I get sick once it's finally summer!
Oh well, I'm better now! And I have to make plans with Connor, I miss him so much.
Clare/Connor Story~
"You seem different. A better different. Like you’re finally comfortable."
Clare closed her eyes, feeling the cool breeze of the day blow gently against her cheeks. The sunlight against her skin made her smile, a strong reminder that it was summer. School was out, people were away doing their own things and she was sitting at the park with her book. She was so tired of being locked up inside of her house she felt like she needed to get away. So she set out to spend the day in the sun. The park wasn’t too crowded, but the faint laughter from kids with their families made her smile as she laid in the grass and looked up from her book. It was nice to get away from everything. It wasnt a huge adventure, but it was simple. Getting lost in a book, forgetting about the problems in her life, it was nice. She smiled again to herself as she looked back down to the page and let herself get lost in the black and white words of the page.
With Jack walking in front of him, the 7 year old moving to his own beat as his casted arm swayed by his side, Connor focused on the nice day. He hadn’t spent so much time outside and since Simpson wouldn’t let Jack out to play because of his arm, Jack had been itching to go out. Finally, after a lot of pestering on the 7 year old’s part, he was allowed to go to the park to meet up with a friend that lived close by and Connor, of course, had to with him. So they approached the park and Jack was quickly off to find his friend but promised to stay in eye-sight of Connor. Connor had no idea what he could do while Jack played so luckily he had brought a book with him. It was a science book that he’d bought from a local bookstore, one that he was using to keep reviewing for school. He walked around, still keeping his eye on Jack who now found his friend, and as he passed a tree he noticed a figure laying on the grass. They were also reading a book, looked like they were completely submerged in the story. Even when a softball flew over them and landed near Connor’s feet, they hadn’t looked up. Connor threw back the ball to its owner and approached the figure in the grass, only to find it being Clare Edwards. “Clare,” he called out hesitantly. He didn’t want to bother her but he also found this to be a good opportunity to knock something off his list. 9. Make or catch up with friends.
“Connor?” Clare spoke softly as she looked up from her book. She marked the book by folding the corner of the page and pushed herself up from the grass. It wasn’t weird running into someone she knew from school, it was just slightly strange having it be him. The two of them hadn’t really spoken since their freshman year but she wasnt against catching up with him. “Wow, didn’t expect to run into you here.” He said as he walked closer. Clare pushed herslef up to the sitting position and smiled as he now stood before her. It was silent for a moment and they just looked at each other before Clare scooted over on the small blanket she sat on and patted beside the spot beside her. “You sure?” He asked and she nodded before he sat beside with his book in hand. “What are you doing here?” She asked as if being at the park was a completely random thing. She felt sort of dumb for asking but Connor didn’t seem to mind it. “I just came here to watch Jack, he couldn’t come without me so I offered.” Clare smiled brightly, “Being the baby sitter?” She asked with a chuckle and Conner shook his head. “No not really, he just couldn’t come alone.” Clare nodded as she looked up and scanned the park for his little brother. She knew it was Mr. Simpson’s son and that thought filled her mind. “How’s Simpson doing?” She asked him. She couldn’t imagine how he was taking what happened at the prom. The last time something dramatic happened at a Degrassi dance he had transformed the school completely.
“He’s been…working still,” Connor answered. “He and the school board has been meeting up a lot. He can’t tell me exactly what they’re talking about but I know it probably has a lot to do with what happened at prom.” “You don’t think he’s going to make more changes than he already has, do you?” Clare asked curiously. Connor shrugged. “I don’t see what else he can do to crackdown on the school. There’s already uniforms, metal detectors, locker searches, the only thing he really could do as drastic would be to shut down the school completely.” Clare noticed how Connor spoke more confidently and precisely. He was no longer uneasy with conversations. She remembered Grade 9 Connor, shy and misunderstood. Now theGrade 11 Connor looked more comfortable. “It was out of his control,” Connor continued. “It was off campus.” “But what about the security?” Clare pointed out. “Like the security guards at school, you’d think there would be some at the prom doors.” “True,” Connor agreed. “I’m just glad it didn’t turn out for the worst. Were you there?” Clare looked down at her book, not wanting to relive the night, but since she hadn’t talked to Connor in so long and because they were good friends before, she decided to open up. “I was,” she told him. “But I wasn’t enjoying myself. Something happened and Jake bailed. Then I just see this commotion in the middle of the dance floor and—” “HEY!” Clare and Connor turned their heads to the voice and waved to Jack, on a swing in the distance. Clare smiled and said, “It’s been over a year since I’ve seen him. He looks a lot bigger now.” “Smarter too,” Connor smiled, still looking at Jack. Finally he turned his head back and urged her to continue, “So there was something going on on the dance floor?”
He was a lot different now than the boy she had once knew, she could tell that just even by this small conversation. She tilted her head to the side and frowned slightly. “Yeah, Adam’s brother was fighting with some guy I’ve never seen before. It looked like he was winning but before you know it, this other guy pulled out a gun.” She spoke the words, reliving the night in her mind abd a shiver climbed down her spine. “I sort of panic and just… I don’t know, hid. And then the next thing I knew, Adam was laying on the ground. I didnt realize it was him at first until Eli ran over to him.” Connor listened to her words intently, nodding along as if he was hooked on the story. “I can’t believe Adam was shot.” He said and Clare nodded. “I know. I’m just glad he was okay. He could have died.” Connor’s face fell, “That would have been terrible. Adam’s a well known guy, it would have affected a lot of people.” She sighed as she looked down at the cover of her book, “I know. He’s so brave and incredibly strong.” “Sort of a hero.” Clare’s head raised and she looked up to Connor with a smile, “Yeah, sort of a hero. I know I look up to him.” Connor grinned back at her. He’d forgotten about his book and reading at the park. He was enjoying talking to Clare. He wasn’t even sure why they’d stopped talking in the first place. They just didn’t run with the same crowds anymore. “I’m sorry Jake bailed on you at prom.” He said abruptly and Clare shook her head, “It’s okay, I just keep telling myself it wasn’t meant to be.” “It must still hurt though, I didn’t really know him well but break ups are never easy.” She pushed her hair out of her face and behind her ear, “Yeah, I’m just trying not to think about it.” Connor could tell by the sudden drop of her tone that the subject was a sore one, “Sorry.” But Clare shook her head and smiled, “No, it’s okay.” a silence fell around them and they both watched Jack as he ventured around the playground. “So, what about you?” Clare spoke up, breaking the silence, “What have you been up to?”
“Nothing,” Connor replied honestly. “I got back from the program a few days after school ended but—” “How was that?” Clare said, trying to get the conversation flowing. “I heard a little bit about what happened with…you…but of course rumors are rumors and you can’t believe them.” Connor appreciated the fact that Clare didn’t automatically think what was going around school to be true. He remembered that that was just the kind of girl she was. But then he thought that what people did say about himwere probably true. The facts were pretty outrageous themselves. “I didn’t realize that looking at girls underwear was as bad as it was and I thought I could stop but I couldn’t,” Connor began his story. “It was me that went into the locker room and stole the underwear. But I did stop.” Clare was nodding the entire time and Connor was happy to see that Clare wasn’t judging him at all. She looked understanding and sympathetic. She had been there through his non-diagnosed Aspergers outbursts years ago and this was no different, just less violent. One of the few to understand Connor’s actions had always been Clare. “I started working on an app—” “The clothing app that Wes and Hannah went to compete with?” Connor nodded. “It was originally my idea but they helped me. I thought that in order to push the app on top, it needed genuine things, like real clothes. So I went into the locker room and took pictures and saw more underwear, it was just an impulse to look at, I swear, and I didn’t take it. But Alli noticed me in there and I guess that sweater I took a picture of was hers. So Simpson thought it was a good idea to send me to a program to get help for my Aspergers. I liked it, it really helped.” Clare smiled. “Yeah it did. You seem different. A better different. Like you’re finally comfortable. I remember when it was hard for you to talk to people.” Connor laughed nervously. “It’s still hard but I guess this was good practice. Talking to you was easy so hopefully talking to other people will be easy as well.” “Other girls maybe?” Clare teased and pointed out Connor’s red cheeks. “Hah! I’m right! Who?!” Connor started laughing genuinely but his cell phone started ringing. After a quick conversation with his aunt, he said, “I guess that’ll be another discussion for another day. Aunt Christine wants us home now.” Clare nodded and watched as Connor stood up. Clare’s neck craned as she looked up to Connor’s face. “You know, you got really really tall,” she pointed out. “Or maybe you just got shorter,” Connor joked. His face turned serious yet soft. “It was really nice catching up with you Clare.” “Likewise,” Clare replied smiling. “If I don’t see you more over the summer, I guess I’ll see you in a red polo?” “That is if I’ll be back at Degrassi,” Connor sighed. “Simpson hasn’t said anything.” “You better be there,” Clare said. “It won’t be the same Degrassi without you.” Connor smiled appreciatively and waved goodbye to Clare. Jack also waved goodbye to Clare and they started heading home. “I remember her,” Jack said as they walked. “Didn’t she help you build robots?” Connor was surprised and happy to hear Jack remember this. Also, it brought back memories of the robot wars in Grade 9. “Yeah Jack, she did.” “Is she your friend?” Jack asked. “A good friend,” Connor answered.
I spent all day at Connor's yesterday!
I can't remember the last time I watched that many movies! And Jack loved my brownies! Haha over all I'd say it was a very good day! Oh and I may or may not have taken Connor's hoodie. It's just as soft as I remember.<3 :)
I don't know how much sleeping I'll be doing tonight, but I am very excited for tomorrow!
I cannot wait to see Connor! <3 :)
P.S. Feel better, Adam! :)
Connor and Eli playing videogames together?
I'd love to be there to see that. I don't think Eli knows what he's getting himself into...I mean I can't even beat Connor, I could probably beat Eli, but I don't think anyone can beat Connor.
I've really missed talking to Connor!
And suddenly I'm more excited for summer ;)
