Book Review 136 - Conqueror

Conqueror by Conn Iggulden is a historical fiction novel about Kublai Khan, grandson of Genghis and his rise to power within the Mongolian and Chinese empires.

This was an action packed, fast paced and exciting read filled with battles, political intrigue and history. It is a multiperspective story, allowing its readers to see how Kublai's journey to becoming emperor affects and determines the fates of the rest of his extended family. The multiperspectives were very well written and diverse enough so that a very intriguing and gripping story quickly developed, full of dramatic twists and turns that kept me invested to the very last page.

Track 4: Aurora/”Conqueror”

Few artists in the past decade have piqued my immediate interest as much as Aurora Aksnes. She appeared out of nowhere in 2012 at the age of 15 with the song "Puppet", but it was her amazing 2013 song “Awakening”.

Musically she's the lovechild of Natalie Merchant & Bjork and as a fan of of those of those artists, I've waited the past couple of years with bated breath for her debut album. She did not disappoint.

Relased in March, All My Demons Greeting Me as a Friend is a great first collection songs that showcase her growth as an artist the past couple years. From stark & ethereal ballads that highlight her haunting vocals to quirky pop romps, the album is a promising start for such a young talent.

'Conqueror' was one the preview singles released for the album & to me, it captures the adventurous sprit of the album and of her music in general. There is a dark innocence that permeates her music. Her voice has a pixie-ish quality, that when coupled some of her lyrical themes make her pleasantly unsettling. It's a unique sound that reminds me of a darker version of some of Ellie Goulding's early work.

I very much look forward to seeing where her career heads the next few years.
