A/N: As previously implied, I really like the idea of referring to you all as the Residents. So, in honor of season 2 of The Resident I have something for you all! Finally, I know. But as I have already complained about, its been a rough little bit of time. So I’m not going to make any promises about the next time that I am going to post something, but here’s to hoping for me. This one I tried to keep lighthearted (despite the seriousness of one of the underlying topics,) however the next one is going to pile on the angst. So enjoy, and plesae please please, feel free to tell me what you guys think!
He strode into the brightly colored room, his arms tucked behind his back inconspicuously as he smiled at the small figure in the bed, curled under layers of blankets. A bright pink and blue beanie all he was able to make out of the girl. He could hear noises coming from under the covers and could hear the familiar tones of Tangled as he heard her soft humming from under the covers. Conrad knocked on the wall twice as he strode in. “Hey pretty lady, how are you feeling?”
The rest of her head became visible as she popped out of her cocoon. A toothless smile gracing her young but taunt features. “Conrad, you came!” The frail voice shrieked joyfully.
“Of course I came, sweetheart. How are you feeling?”
“Cold, but my stomach is feeling better than it did after chemo. I ate jello today!” Conrad smiled at the news, feeling the familiar pang of wanting to take the girls pain while knowing that he couldn't. So he did the next best thing.
He strolled to her bedside and waited for her to mention something about how ‘obviously there was something behind his back.’ Jessica was young, but she was smart. She was very clearly suspicious but smiled largely. “Whatcha got there?”
Conrad offered his own smile and pulled out a rainbow colored bear from behind his back. “I saw it down in the gift shop and thought you would love it.”
Her smile grew larger still as he handed it to her and she immediately tucked it into her pile of blankets, beside her.
Conrad had met Jessica a few months prior after she had been brought in for some symptoms that, all of them combined, had left for an extremely sick little girl. Conrad had been her doctor at first and then had been the one to console her parents after they had been told of the long journey ahead of them.
After a long conversation, a few days after the girl had been admitted, Conrad quickly came to the realization that money was tight within the family and they weren't sure what all they were going to have to sacrifice to make sure that one of them was with her at all times.
By the end of the conversation, Conrad had sympathized with the family before offering any help that he could offer. Which meant that the doctor was with Jessica as often as possible, especially while her parents were out working. They called frequently, both had Conrad's cell phone number, as well as the number for Jessica's hospital room.
It didn't take long for Conrad to become the young child's 'very bestest friend in the whole wide universe.’ He accepted the title with pride and honor.
He sat on the edge of her bed and swung a foot up to run his leg parallel with her body. “Is that Tangled I hear?” He aimed for humorous with a hint of incredulous. He succeeded.
She immediately ducked back under the covers, a giggle following her movements. “I can't believe you're watching my favorite movie without me.” He pulled her into a light hug as he swung his second leg onto the bed, pulling the girl into his arms as he got the both of them comfortable.
“We can restart it!” The girl shrieked as Conrad pulled her beanie off, her head shiny in its wake. He pulled it down onto his own head, over his eyes, waiting for her to tear it off of him.
It happened moments later as her hand ripped it off and she smiled brightly up at him. She pulled her hat on to her own head again as they both settled. “It's ok, we can just continue from you're at. I'll just watch the beginning when I get home, pretty girl.”
She nodded as she pushed the tablet into his lap and she wrapped the blankets around the both of them as they focused on the movie.
Hours later, Conrad was shaken awake by a hand on his shoulders. He blinked a few times as he adjusted to the dark room, Jessica deep asleep in his arms. Nic smiled down at him as she took in the sight. “I'm about to head home, do you need a drive?”
He shook his head. “Her parents are working all night, I'm going to stay with Jess tonight.”
Nic’s smile didn’t waver, and she patted his shoulder as she readjusted the blankets around the two of them. “I'll see you in the morning then.”
“Thank you though, Nic.”
“Get some rest, Conrad.” Conrad was asleep again before he could hear the door close again.
