Corona Chronicles Entry #1
I am going to write about everything I watch on youtube (maybe other streaming platforms as well) during the quarantine period. Everyone should be practicing social distancing and only going out when absolutely necessary. I have used this blog to write about wrestling before like my 31 Days of Hallowicked series and I am excited to get back at it again.
MV Young is a great twitter follow and while MV is practicing social distancing he posted a list of a bunch of his youtube matches. This was the only one I haven’t seen and while I will probably write about more of those matches this is the first one.
You that feeling you get when you have never thought to book a match but when you see it booked it makes perfect sense. My favorite promotions are the ones that do this best. I personally think Beyond does it really well. MV Young vs Matt Tremont is not a match I ever thought I wanted to see but it makes perfect sense.
MV Young’s thing is hitting people hard. He reminds me a little of Kenny Omega in a way but also someone who wrestled in Ring of Honor in the 2000s. If wrestling ever comes back in 2020 he is going to be a breakout star.
The video is long and mostly a promotion for a PPV but it has cool VHS aesthetics I am a sucker for. The only thing I know about Capital Wrestling is they are from DC. It opens with a close up on Matt Tremont. I wonder what the best camera angle to shoot promos are. So much of wrestling is so bland looking that anything that even resembles a real film making is interesting. This close up of Matt Tremont is cool. Tremon talks about how he is going to decapitate MV.
Nine minutes into the video MV talks about how he is going to fight for his life against Matt Termont. As far as I know, Matt Tremont is not a horrible human being and a pretty good wrestling. I don’t know how much wrestling MV watched as a kid but there is a good chance he looked up to Matt Termont so this is a big deal.
MV gets announced as the Pop-Punk Prototype which sounds cool but just like most pop punk lyrics mean nothing really. The match starts and MV does the classic bad guy thing of running out of the ring. There isn’t much set up beside these two yelling at the camera so it sets the pace for who is going to be the good guy and who is going to be the bad guy quick. You know so the fans know who to cheer for.
Once Tremont gets a hold of MV he just beats the ever living shit out of him. They brawl on the outside of the ring and MV finally gets in some offense by shoving Matt into the ring post. MV throws Tremont into the ring and seems completely shocked when Tremont is able to kick out.
MV leaves the ring again but this time brings chairs into the ring. He sets them up across from each other and challenges Matt Tremont to a bar brawl. They sit across from each other and trade hard strikes back and forth. MV is obviously outmatched but he doesn’t let it show. Tremont stands up and punches MV. Tremont ends it soon after with a fireman's carry to MV for the three count.
This match was fun but never really pulled off into third gear. Both these two are pretty good deathmatch guys when they want to be and so I expected a little more plunder to be introduced to the match. This was fun, two dudes hitting each other very hard which is almost always a good wrestling match.
