Asuras
Asuras are part of Indian mythology along with Devas, Yakshas (nature spirits) and Rakshasas (ghosts, ogres). Asuras feature in many cosmological theories in Hinduism.
They live in a utopia called Hiranyapura or Patala where denotes the subterranean realms of the universe – which are located under the earth.
In the earliest Vedic literature, all supernatural beings are called Devas and Asuras.
In post-Vedic texts, such as the Puranas and the Itihasas (epic history) of Hinduism, the Devas represent the good, and the Asuras the bad.
The asuras battle constantly with the devas. Asuras are described in Indian texts as powerful superhuman demigods with good or bad qualities. There are good Asuras and the malevolent ones.
In the earliest layer of Vedic texts Agni, Indra and other gods are also called Asuras, in the sense of them being "lords" of their respective domains, knowledge and abilities. In later Vedic and post-Vedic texts, the benevolent gods are called Devas, while malevolent Asuras compete against these Devas and are considered "enemy of the gods". In the etymological roots of Asura to Asu, which means life of the spiritual world or departed spirits.
In the oldest verses of the Samhita layer of Vedic texts, the Asuras are any spiritual, divine beings including those with good or bad intentions, and constructive or destructive inclinations or nature.

アスラ
アスラとは、インド神話・バラモン教・ヒンドゥー教における神族または魔族の総称である。アスラ神族はヒラニヤプラやパーターラと呼ばれる地下の黄金郷に住んでいる。 アスラ神族はデーヴァ神族のようにアムリタを飲んではいないため、不死・不滅の存在ではないが、自らに想像を絶する厳しい苦行を課すことによって神々をも超越する力を獲得し、幾度となくデーヴァ（神々）から世界の主権を奪うことに成功している。 本来、『リグ・ヴェーダ』に見られるように、古代インドにおいてアスラは悪役的な要素はあまりなく、デーヴァ神族の王インドラに敵対することもある天空神・司法神ヴァルナとその眷属を指していたが、その暗黒的・呪術的な側面が次第に強調されるようになり、時代が下った古代インドではアスラを魔族として扱うようになった。
「アスラはア（a＝非）・スラ（sura＝生）である」という俗語源説も、この転回を支持するものだった。 インド神話がバラモン教からヒンドゥー教へと発展し、シヴァ・ヴィシュヌが新しく主神となると、アスラはヴァルナの眷属であるという認識は薄れ、神々の敵対者としてアスラの呼称は使われるようになった。
ただしすべてのアスラ神族がデーヴァ神族の敵対者ではない。プラフラーダやバーナースラのようなアスラもいる。ガヤのように人々の罪を洗浄するアスラ神族もいる。
最も古いヴェーダの文献、サンヒーターの詩集において、アスラは、良きも悪しきも、破壊と創造や自然界全てを含め、ありとあらゆる神の存在とされていた。
