I’m gonna save all of you time and money
Last week, I had to take my car to the shop to have a wheel hub assembly replaced. I thought about doing it myself, but as I’ve never done that repair before, I thought it might be better to have a professional do it.
I took my car to the dealership because they know me, know my car, and were the only place that could do it on short notice so I wouldn’t have to miss work.
They quoted me $440. Which was like a punch in the gut, but after getting some help from my mom, I scraped enough together to cover it while still having enough money left for gas and such for the rest of the week.
The shop not only tried to charge me and extra $50 just to diagnose the problem (I already knew what the problem was, k thx), they also tried to make me feel bad for not letting them diagnose the airbag light that had come on on my dash. Thanks for making me feel poor in public, it’s my favorite.
After all that, when I went to pay, they ended up charging me $507. That’s $67 more than the quote, which is way more than could be accounted for by fees and taxes. Which, in my opinion, should be included in a quote so your customers don’t get blindsided.
So, to get to my point, I just discovered this site, Repairpal.com, which will give you an estimated cost for any repair on any car according to your zipcode, AND a list of local shops that will honor their estimate! It even breaks down the estimate into parts and labor costs so you know what things SHOULD cost, rather than getting stuck just... accepting whatever the repair shop charges because they’re holding your car hostage.
Anyways, yeah. Save yourself some time and some money the next time you have to get your car fixed. Because I don’t know about you, but I’m real tired of getting taken advantage of.
