When Does Copywriting Happen in the Design Process?
When does copywriting happen in your team’s process? Some people say you should design with real content. They’re not wrong. But real copy in your wireframes will lead to unproductive conversations. So... when should you add your real copy to the process?
There are lots of advocates for designing with real content. “Content-first” design, they call it. Those people preach the idea of using real content in your wireframes and prototypes, rather than “lorem ipsum” text.
That’s a smart suggestion (you thought I was going to disagree, didn’t you?). Although sometimes it is easier said than done.
And “content-first” people know it is easier said than done. That’s why they preach it: it’s easier to ignore the content, but it’s dangerous. Sometimes the best way to do things isn’t the easiest way.
However, if you just say “design with real content” we have over-simplified the whole process, we have made copywriting the most important step, and we are going to delay everything else in production so we can create all of our content first, without knowing what design the content will fit into.
That doesn’t seem right either.
So... when is the best time to include copywriting?
Well, that depends on what type of copy we’re talking about...
ok let’s do this..

Good sign for that I'm actually concentrating on the content itself. Which this post is not. Which adds some taste of irony. Which I like.

Steps to Redesign a Website as a UX Designer (II)
After we got approved from the stakeholder in the definition phase, it’s time to do the planning phase.
Based on the stakeholder’s requirements, the goal is “reconstruction” the site rather than “repair” the site. At the beginning, I got lost. I knew I have to build IA, make users stories, users scenarios and user flows, but I didn’t know which comes first and I even didn’t know the exact differences among them. After reading lots of articles, I got the points.
A user flow is the steps from A to B. A is the entrance, and B is the final achievements. Except entrance and achievements, we also need to consider about persons. For the entrance, it could be from social media, newsletter, organic search, Ads and direct URL. Each entrance may generate a different story. Achievements are based on users’ need and it could be to subscribe a newsletter or read articles with a special tag. For example, if we have 3 personas, 3 entrances, and each persona has 3 achievements, the total will be 27 user flow and it could have some duplications, but we have to consider about it like this way just in case we don’t miss anything.
For IA, stick note is a good friend. I transferred all the content from the old sitemap to stick note and add some new content (from users’ interview script). With their senior writer’s help, we reorganized the IA.
Now I am working on the wireframe which belongs to the design phase. I found that it’s not an easy job to design a website without users search and domain knowledge. The most difficult part is the content which means I have to figure out the content in each page. So I kept bothering my stakeholder and tried to get ideas from her.
Always content first is what i learned from this experience. Design should come after we prepared all the content for the website.
