it will shock exactly no one that i have discovered a bug in tumblr’s new interface.

if you are following one or more tags, and you have disabled endless scrolling in your settings, you can theoretically reproduce this bug-- if you’re lucky. but it’s pure chance whether you’ll encounter it or not, and how drastic the effects will be.

so you may be aware that you can “follow” tags, and this will cause tumblr to randomly intersperse your dashboard with posts from those tags-- usually new posts, but sometimes quite old ones.

you may also be aware that disabling endless scrolling splits your dash up into “pages” which you can browse through, with a “next” button at the bottom of each page to bring you to the next page. 

but, if tumblr decides to randomly place a post from one of your followed tags as the very last post on the current page, this is when the bug will trigger. when you hit the “next” button, instead of going to the next part of your dashboard, you will instead be taken back to the point in time on your dashboard when that tagged post was originally made.

it took me a while to notice something was off when this bug triggered for me today-- i started seeing posts from people who hadn’t posted on my dash in a long time, and eventually i noticed i was looking at my dashboard from two years ago. at some point tumblr had served me a post from a less-popular tag i follow that was two years old, and happened to place it at the bottom of the page. so i got yeeted back in time two years.

it was pure blind chance that i happened to encounter this bug, so it doesn’t surprise me that no one else seems to have noticed it. my bet is, this is a result of the way tumblr recently re-implemented pagination after initially removing it from the new dash. don’t misunderstand-- i am really happy this functionality got brought back. but uh. it looks like they did a whoopsie when coding it.

im not brave enough to mine the place for all its laughs and well-deserved ridicule but really someone else should get on that now that @talesfrominceland is out of the game
