Several passages leave vivid after-images, as when Ashley Murphy hovers in profile, her strong feet shimmering like hummingbird wings. As she bends forward or arches toward the sky, she alternates between atonement and elation. Murphy is a marvel: she dances with crystalline clarity, managing to be both expressive and utterly elusive. She gives nothing away.

Exhibition “Contested Space”, The New Score at B53, 1-31 March 2019.
From 1-31 March I will be writing: “The New Score - Collective Creation for Visual Artists". The writing of this essay is my work for the exhibition. When entering the space, the visitor can see an installation with 31 black letter trays. Every day, via (digital) post I will send a new version of: ”The New Score - Collective Creation for Visual Artists” to B53. Every day the updated version will be printed out and placed in the letter tray for visitors of B53 to read. The plan is that on the 31st day, the last day of March, which is also the last day of the exhibition, B53 will have in the last letter tray, the final and complete version of: ”The New Score - Collective Creation for Visual Artists” by Kim Engelen.

The Dance Theatre of Harlem held their New York season at the Frederick P. Rose Hall, Jazz at Lincoln Center Wednesday, April 23 through Sunday, April 27. Two very ambitious programs were offered featuring works by five choreographers. The season, which had something for everyone, could best be described as uneven.

The first session began by brief introductions from all participants, followed by a presentation from Chicago focused on their city and the notion of contested space, which culminated in a discussion across the three cities.
