Converting MKV to MP4

As I've recently discovered, Adobe Premiere Pro (and other video editing softwares) do not work with .mkv which sucks because I know most of my media is .mkv but -- I found a few tutorials that I merged together for the easiest way to convert .mkv to .mp4.

You will need the program VLC Player, which is a free program that is super handy to have anyways since it plays a whole lot of formats. The tutorial below was not originally written by me, I just compared a few different ones I found and tweaked them into the method that seems to be more cohesive / streamlined.

Run "VLC media player".

From main menu select "Media" > "Convert / Save...".

On "File" tab, click "Add..." button.

Choose your MKV file. After that, it should be added to the list.

Click "Convert/Save" dropdown.

Select Profile: "Video - H.264 + MP3 (MP4)".

Click on the icon button that has hint: "Edit selected profile". (wrench)

On "Encapsulation" tab, leave "MP4/MOV" selected.

On "Video codec" tab, use Video Codec: Codec = H-264

On "Audio codec" tab, use MPEG 4 ( AAC ) Sa.mple Rate =44100 Hz

Click "Save" button.

In "Destination" selection, click "Browse" & select location for new file.

Click "Start" button.

Observe progress bar in the main window as file is converted.*

*From my experience, it takes real time to convert a file so if it's an hour long, it'll take an hour to convert and so on.

Forewarning: converting a high definition .mkv to .mp4 may result in some quality loss and the possibility of slightly out of sync video / audio but from my test runs today I haven't found anything that is noticeable.
