The “Blue Bottle Experiment”, or “The Fading of Methylene Blue”, is a great example of a reduction- oxidation (redox) reaction. In a redox reaction, oxidation states of atoms are changed. In this demo, methylene blue dye is added to a mix of sodium hydroxide (NaOH), glucose (C6H12O6), and water. As the reaction progresses in alkaline solution, glucose reduces (or changes the oxidation state of) methylene blue to a colorless form. When the clear liquid in the bottle is shaken, the methylene blue is re- oxidized, changing the color back to blue!
