When I bought the latest limited edition “Gyoza” flavored Cup Noodle, I thought it would simply have mini dumplings added in, but instead, as you can see, they deconstructed the dumplings and added the individual ingredients in with the noodles... cabbage, chives and little gyoza stuffing meatballs. There was also a packet of gyoza “tare”, or sauce, included that you mixed in after everything came up to temp. Not bad for a quick lunch, but as a gyoza lover, I had expected more depth of flavor. Needed more garlic. But the red and yellow cups really popped off shelves.

Lawson, 6am Sunday

Best thing I found at a convenience store in Japan last month was this “TKG Onigiri” at Air Lawson in Haneda Airport. You see, TKG stand for “tamago kake gohan”, which is a simple dish made by cracking a raw egg over a steaming hot bowl of rice and adding a little soy sauce. Mix and eat. Just like that.

Here, the fine folks at Lawson, Japan’s largest convini chain, tried to recreate said dish in the form of a rice ball. And they did a pretty dam good job of it too, even down to the keeping the texture of the raw egg! Or should we say “egg topping” as the package does? Consider me impressed.

Been a long day but I made it! Now for traditional #firstnightintokyo meal- surprise #onigri and #pocarisweat from the #convini 🇯🇵 light food and rehydrate, aloe yoghurt for the morning. Hotel room is standard tiny and I was a bit annoyed at how blah it was, but had a shower, got my wifi sorted (super helpful service here, as always), then stepped out side to have a proper look (minus suitcase and airplane grumpy) and I am super happy! Right bang in the middle of #ginza 😳business men rolling up in limos, snobby women in kimonos, groups out for Friday night trying to find clubs, people just being people rushing to the station after work wearing worn in business clothes... many of them trying to look at me without being obvious because I realized that a gaijin wearing tight denim shorts, a singlet and dirty dirty boots is not a normal look for Ginza on a Friday night 😂 I get so self conscious about my body in Japan! I forgot about that. Now for some light #japanesevarietyshow before some hard care sleep! (at Ginza)
