Culture was, and forever would be, a vital part of what separated them from the basest of creatures. The capacity to appreciate art, literature, music was one of their most precious gifts and Maria never took it for granted. So, despite the less than stellar atmosphere of the city when she’d heard there was a museum she’d felt compelled to walk its halls.
The tips of her stiletto heels echoed off the floor as she stepped down them, pausing at regular intervals to appreciate grand portraits adorning the walls when a small stand caught her attention, and her breath. A Psalter, book of Psalms. Bending slightly and gripping the fur of her coat she read each line of Latin easily, engrossed in the page until a nearby presence gave her cause to pull back.
“O-oh, forgive me.” she said, smiling at the gentleman, “I,” she paused a moment, “I used to be read to from books like these.” By her husband, by her sons... “It’s the first time in centuries I’ve seen on so well maintained.”
