The Vegan Alternative
September comes along like a chilly high-speed train and cuts through the picnics and barbecues of summer. We are wall to wall cookery programmes on T.V, whether you watch them in real time or as Prue Leith advises, on the net. Jamie, John and Greg, Giorgio and Rosemary, Pru and Paul and Nadya, (a personal favourite) are gracing us with their culinary knowledge, (apologies if I’ve missed anyone). So, it is no surprise that my thoughts turned to cookbooks and eating out. As my current overseas visitor is a vegan I thought I would investigate where to find good vegan eats.

This shrine to healthy eating is a great place to start when trying vegan food for the first time. The wide range of world cuisines on offer means that there is something for everyone. Here you will find vegan chicken (chickn) and mushroom pie, alongside spiced chickpeas and sweet potato curry, full english breakfast next to udon noodles There’s a youthful, buzzy atmosphere so my young friend felt very much at home.

As it is impractical and expensive eating out every night in the capital, I also found some meat and dairy free cookbook titles to share with you. These aren’t tried and tested but perhaps if you own one you could let me know what recipes worked for you.
I can however, highly recommend The Roasting Tin Cookbook by Rukmini Iyer. It is not wholly vegetarian but has some great veggie recipes. Its my kind of cook book as it advocates one pot cooking.
The vegetable couscous, with its delicious spice mix is one of my favourite suppers.
Lastly, thinking about veganism as a total lifestyle choice? Well these vegan clogs are available from Lotta’s from Stockholm and don’t cost the earth, whichever way you look at it.
