July 4th: A Time of Comfort and A Reminder 4 Change by Myke Y.U.N.G.

It’s that moment in the middle of the summer

When the coolers have to be stocked up, paper

Plates and aluminum trays need to be bought,

And you need to come up with an outfit more patriotic

Than Captain America’s suit. Time for cookouts with

Playlists dipped in nostalgia and giving birth to unforgettable

Moments on the dance floor or patches of grass that’s trying

Not to get ripped apart by your frantic feet. However the grill  

Master is the DJ of the evening with them needing to make sure

Every hot dog and hamburger is cooked just right like they're  

Playing a mobile game, but a burnt dog here will lead to a ruined  

Night for someone or even worse, spark for family drama with it  

Taking more than an upbeat song to turn it around. Reconnection  

And reunions are sprinkled out through the partying with stories of  

The past, finding audiences and wonderment on the fates of family  

And friends finally being revealed, yet the day can’t be over until we  

See fireworks in the night sky illuminating the faces of people who

Are well fed and relaxed with worries taking a temporary vacation  

Even if it’s only until tomorrow morning, but while we might all see  

The red, white, blue in as many different views as the states that make

The stars, we should be grateful for the many freedoms that we have  

In this country, but also use this holiday to remind us that the list is far

From complete and we must continue to fight for it to expand like a choir

Taking new members to sing the national anthem.

I haven’t been to a cookout in years I feel as black people we keep focusing on what the white man is doing

Can we have more cookouts now especially when Covid is over please

The cookouts are where it’s at! I mean we focus on our and keep a watchful eye. Cause we all know how that goes😒. I want us to be able to connect back with each other as well! I hope so but is Covid even gonna be over? Is the first question!

Poetry Corner

A bright autumnal Saturday afternoon. Just a leaf fire, more or less. Some smoked sausage. Some pop. And The Banana Splits killing time that otherwise would seem to be drowning in ennui. What more could be asked for?

And not that far off: Augie Doggie and Doggie Daddy under much the same scenario, only it’s hot dogs for the most part. Just a simple “father/son bonding” bit.

Not far off from that one: Wendy and Rita, between missions involving Old Nugget Nose (who, know, is sworn never to reveal where the Lost Dutchman’s Mine may be), heating up some homemade chili and sharing such with a few of their fellow Laydeez (if for no other reason than that it’s just a Saturday afternoon driven more by fear of ennui).
