Shanghai BBQ Cook Off

Last weekend was my first ever full weekend off work while living in Shanghai.  Hooray!  I can’t even begin to describe how happy I felt last Friday night, knowing that I could come home, relax, have a drink and look forward to the next two days off.  No teaching, and no customer service work for the first time in three years. I love Monday-Friday jobs!

Friday night at our house was crowded and slightly chaotic but smelt wonderful.  My housemate Chase and friend Jacob were putting the final preparations together for their entry into this year Shanghai BBQ Cook Off.   It was their first appearance and they had been procuring meats and spices, experimenting with sausage combinations and basting ribs in our fridge for days. 

The boys woke up super early to bring the barbecue and set up their booth “Two Hands and a Smile” at the Cool Docks.

The BBQ cook off is run by Bubbas, and teams can register to set up a booth and compete.  Anyone can enter to get a shot at the title. There are 5 judging categories: 

Best Sausage

Best Chicken (legs, wings or tenders)

Best Pork Ribs (my favourite category)

Best Beef (any cut of beef. Brisket seemed to be most common)

Best Pulled/Chopped Meat.  

Our boys entered every category.

For the public, the entry fee is RMB 100 which gets you 5 taster tickets to use to “buy” samples from each booth.  You get only 1 voting ticket to give to your favourite team after sampling as much as you can through the cook off. 

By the time I arrived at midday, the Cool Docks were already packed.  Sample plates of buffalo chicken wings were lined up ready to go, with homemade ranch dressing and blue cheese sauce.

My favourite were the beautifully basted pork ribs.  Super moist and tender meat that just falls straight off the bone. And that sweet and sticky marinate.....so so good.

Because you know it’s all about that baste.

The boys teamed up with Bad Boy Bangers to create a special sausage flavour combo just for the cook-off - chicken, jalapeño and pineapple. It’s not the most attractive photo, but it sure was a delicious snag.

Here’s a photo of the beef brisket, which was not quite as tender as the ribs.  

And here is the pulled pork carnitas.

Everything was washed down with icy cold beers. And tequila / fireball shots for the willing.

Lots of partying and dancing happening throughout the day.

TIP: Next time you are around BBQ smoke all day, bring eyedrops!

Chase has been cooking for us all at home many times, and it was great to show off his cooking to everyone else in Shanghai!  Although we didn’t win any prizes on the day, it was a fun expat community event and I loved sampling everyones best plates of food and sharing in our love of the BBQ. 

Meat, smoke, summer and good times. It was a pretty perfect start to the weekend for me!
