One of these dogs is a puppy.
The other is a distinguished middle-age gentleman. And it's not hard to see which is which haha
My roommate adopted this big beautiful boy, Jasper. He's a bluetick coonhound. Copper is a lot even for him haha. But he helps wear her out
Clyde Acrylic on canvas 8x8". Charles Morgenstern, 2021. A portrait in memory of Clyde the coonhound.
I decided I'm going to share the story of my girl,Scarlet, here. Mainly because Coonhounds and Coonhound mixes are terribly mistreated and have terribly misleading reputations. It's nearly as bad as Pitbulls, believe it or not.
So Scarlet was found on I-75 at 6months old, she had been tossed out of a pick up truck. Her foster dad was kind enough to stop and pick her up. When we got her, she had no clue how to be a house pet. She had never been on a walk, she didn't know what a belly rub was, no knowledge of basic commands. She was a fence jumper, she can easily hop a 4ft fence, and even climb 8ft fences. She's not allowed in outdoor doggie daycares cause she hops the fences 😂 She can climb trees after squirrels, she really loves squirrels 🐿
We think, and it's mostly guess work, but we think she was bred by a hunter who wanted a superior hunting dog with the obedience and retrieving ability of Labs and the scent and tracking ability of Hounds. But clearly he skipped genetics in school, because Scarlet is all Coonhound. The only thing Lab about her is her appearance. So he threw out.
That is actually really common for Coonhounds. In SC, it's legal to abandon a hunting dog, because a hunting dog isn't a dog...its a tool. A means to an end. So when their Hounds get lost in the woods, or can't keep up with the pack, are too old to do their job, they get rid of them. And legally, they're allowed to.
Puppy (sister’s dog) made the move to their new house today. We’ll miss you Puppy.
Boomer has to stay here a couple weeks, as they don’t have a fence set up for him. But they do for Puppy.
Bonus picture : Puppy chilling in the truck. We transported him to my sister’s new house.
