Hello.

My name is Derek. You can call me Derek or D3rlord3. I do not much care. he/him or it/its.

You may have heard of my death. Reports of such were greatly exaggerated. All that to say, I am alive and.. now capable of looking away from Minecraft, although admittedly still in discomfort. The King is dead, although the knowledge he saw fit to give me has stayed behind.

I'll use this as.. a journal of sorts. To jot my thoughts down. Feel free to leave me asks, I might even answer them.

this takes place post-canon (obviously). The KiY died when Derek became his Vessel, but Derek didn't die. He was left super weak for a bit and nearly died, but he recovered, although he uses a cane now :). He does still have infinite knowledge and he will bitch about it regularly.

Headcanons this blog will treat as truth (because I can do whatever I want):

- Derek is autistic.

- Derek has moral OCD.

- Derek is ace.

- Derek can, with effort, control what information he can Know. As such, he endeavours not to Know personal stuff about people.

- Derek has chronic pain and his encounter with the King made it worse.

- Derek curses like a sailor.

- Derek's Real Life Job is as an actuary. He works from home.

- Derek was stuck staring at his screen surviving off smoothies for two months.

- Derek self-harms when he's anxious

My Derek design

Seizures are the most obvious part of Epilepsy, but there is so much more to it than that. Epilepsy is frequently accompanied with short term memory loss, mood swings, concentration and attention difficulties, fatigue and insomnia, migraines. All this can make school especially difficult. Especially since disability services don't offer help for the condition or comorbidities. The stigma revolving Epilepsy can cause individuals to lose jobs. I've had to stop putting my Epilepsy advocacy work on my resumes because employers were finding out I have the condition and not hiring me. So I only told them after I was hired. People with Epilepsy have to take certain precautions to stay safe, including no driving unless seizure free, wearing helmets on all wheeled activities(regular folks should do that too), no baths or only swimming with others to prevent drowning. (I nearly drowned in the bathtub when I was 4 because of a seizure)

So while seizures are the most obvious part of Epilepsy, there's comorbidities attach that weigh down an individual.

Famous People with Epilepsy

Prince John of the UK: He was the 5th son and youngest child of King George V and Queen Mary. He was diagnosed in 1909 and most likely had autism as well. After he was diagnosed, he was forced into seclusion, under the excuse that being in public was 'too risky for his health.’ In reality, the king and queen feared their reputation should John have a seizure in public and deemed him ‘not presentable to the outside world.’ Puberty caused his seizures to intensify, and at the age of 13, he died in his sleep from a severe seizure, most likely status epilepticus.

Harriet Tubman: When Harriet Tubman was a teenager, a slave owner hit her in the head, causing a traumatic brain injury. Afterwards, she developed temporal lobe epilepsy and started having seizures. The 2019 movie ‘Harriet’ has an incredible portrayal of Harriet Tubman’s seizures and epilepsy. In general, its a wonderful movie, despite taking the usual Hollywood artistic creative freedoms. Highly recommend.

Prince: Prince was diagnosed with epilepsy as a child, and compensated by putting all of it into his music. The song Purple Rain was about his seizures and his epilepsy.

Lil Wayne: Lil Wayne has Epilepsy and frequent seizures due to stress and overwork. He was hospitalized in 2017 after having three seizures in a row which lowered his heart rate activity to 30%. Take breaks and rest, folks!

Danny Glover: Most likely known for The Color Purple and The Lethal Weapon series, Danny Glover also has Epilepsy. He was diagnosed at 15, and his seizures are frequently accompanied by an aura which he says comes ‘in an unbearable noise I would hear.’ He has been seizure free since he was 35.

Hugo Weaving: Most likely known for his roles as Elrond in LOTR, he also has Epilepsy! He was diagnosed as a teenager, and had seizures at least once a year. He’s been seizure free for 18 yrs, but he still doesn’t drive because of his Epilepsy. Unrelated to his bio, but my fav quote by him is this one, “People always thought I was laid back, but I was basically doped for 30 years on epilepsy drugs. I ran out of my meds filming in the desert and went cold turkey. I was on a moderately high dose and it was masking a nervous anxiety I didn’t know I had”. XD But as a super laid back person who’s been on epilepsy meds since the age of 4, it makes me wonder what my true personality is. Hmmmm....

Joan of Arc: Given that she lived in the 15th century, its difficult to determine for certain if she had epilepsy. HOWEVER, having written a paper on her for my history degree that specifically focused on her seizures, I can say for certain that the voices in her head, the images she described which isn’t specific images but bright balls of light, the age of onset(age 13), all those factors are a textbook description of an auditory simple partial seizure. So most likely, she had temporal lobe epilepsy and in pure 15th century style, they chalked it up to the Lord and Angels. 

And that’s only to name a few! There’s also Patsy Custis Washington(George Washington’s step daughter), Theodore Roosevelt, Rosemary Kennedy, Rick Harrison from Pawn Stars, Alan Faneca from the Steelers, Broze Medal Olympic Hockey Player Chanda Gunn, Cameron Boyce from Disney Channel, just to start.

So keep in mind, my fellow Epilepsy Warriors, if they can battle their brain and come out top, so can YOU!

Epilepsy is extremely common. 1 in 26 people will develop Epilepsy in their lifetime and currently, Epilepsy affects more people than cerebral palsy, muscular dystrophy, multiple sclerosis and cystic fibrosis COMBINED. Yet it only gets a fraction of the funding and research.

Epilepsy does kill too, quite often. Every year it kills more people than breast cancer or skin cancer or drunk driving accidents.

Ben Tallmadge’s Writing Desk

In 1968, the Smithsonian was given a traveling desk through the bequest of Emily Howell Wilkins, great-granddaughter of Benjamin Tallmadge.

The triple-opening desk has space for both writing and reading, as well as a calendar with organizational pockets. Removing the locking pin and depressing a small hole in the storage area pops off a false front on the desk, revealing three “secret” drawers.

I came across this on the Smithsonian website. Its not currently on display. Seriously, guys, check out museum websites. only a small fraction of artifacts that museums own are on display, but most of them have it digitized so they’ll have the artifacts on their websites.
