I hate how the media paints Azerbaijan as this amazing country when it's not, like, do they not remember Anush Apetyan? I still cry for her, and my heart breaks so much for her family, especially for her children. 

We live in an age where justice is for sale, and morality can be bought with commodities like oil — something azerbaijan has plenty of. For us Armenians, this means that no matter how heinous the crimes, no matter how horrific the massacres, the world will always turn a blind eye. The scales of justice are tipped, not by truth or humanity, but by those who can afford to pay the price.

Anush Apetyan....her name should be engraved on the forehead of the collective human conscience.

For all those who don't know her story, Anush Apetyan was a mother of three children and an Armenian soldier who suffered unimaginable torture, mutilation, sexual violence, and death at the hands of azerbaijani military forces in September 2022 during a period of ceasefire near Jermuk, in the southern Armenian province of Vayots Dzor. Her torturers mutilated her body, put two severed fingers in her mouth and gouged out her eyes, which they replaced with stones. Anush's arms and legs were also cut off. On her chest, her killers wrote hate messages against the Armenian people. It was while the azerbaijani soldiers surrounding her were celebrating and mocking her. They filmed the act of violence in detail and distributed the video via telegram. This act of torturing Armenians, filming it, and then proudly posting it online for the world to see is disturbingly popular among the azeri military. After all, what do they have to fear? No one cares. No one will punish them. After all, who remembers the Armenians?

COP29: Brazil may lead global actions to mitigate climate change

To Márcio Astrini, the conference is difficult, but the country has been reaching goals and and may lead the agenda

The 29th edition of the United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP), which began on Monday (11) in Baku, Azerbaijan, is likely to be one of the hardest ever. This is because it is taking place while there are ongoing wars, a breakdown of trust and the election of Donald Trump in the United States. However, it is also an opportunity for Brazil to position itself as a global leader in actions to mitigate climate change. 

This is the assessment of the executive secretary of the Climate Observatory, Márcio Astrini. “Brazil has to fill this vacuum now – this gap left by those who are leaving – and take the lead. Not only Brazil, but other countries too. The COP is knocking on our door, and so is the call for new global leadership. Brazil needs to take that place,” he said. 

According to him, the country has made significant progress in meeting its mitigation targets since the recent presidential victory of Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (Workers’ Party), with the possibility of meeting them by 2025, something few countries will achieve. However, the time has come to present more robust proposals for reducing greenhouse gas emissions.

“These good figures are not enough for Brazil to lead the negotiating agenda, which is where we want to see Brazil in 2025, at the conference here [COP30 will be held in the city of Belém]. One thing is to do your homework, and another thing is to set an example and push the global agenda,” he argues. “The global agenda isn’t a domestic task. That's the principle of everything. If you don't do it even at home, then there's no point in wanting to be the world's negotiating leader. Now, Brazil needs to take the next step, which is to put itself forward as a leader by having an aggressive proposal for reducing greenhouse gases.”

Developing world urges rich nations to defy Trump’s ‘climate nihilism’

Poorer countries want rapid emission cuts and more financial help in face of US leader’s stance on global heating

Developing countries are calling on the rich world to defy the US president, Donald Trump, and bridge the global chasm over climate action, before the goal of limiting global temperatures to safe levels is irretrievably lost.

Diplomats from the developing world are rallying to support Brazil, which will host a crucial climate summit in November, after last year’s talks in Azerbaijan ended in disappointment and acrimony.

Ali Mohamed, the chair of the African group of negotiators and Kenya’s special envoy for climate change, pointed to record temperatures last year and continuing extreme weather. “Africa, responsible for less than 4% of global greenhouse gas emissions, remains disproportionately affected by the intensifying impacts of climate change,” he said. “It is unacceptable that this devastation is caused by the pollution of just a few countries in the world, specifically the G20, and they must take responsibility for their actions.”

As well as needing rich countries to cut their emissions, vulnerable nations need financial help, as they struggle to cope with the devastation they are already seeing. “Adaptation is the priority for us, not a priority,” said Evans Njewa, chair of the least developed countries group. “We are prioritising adaptation, for our key sources of livelihood, and our economies. [Adaptation is essential to our] agriculture, water, the management of natural resources, food security and nutrition.”

Patience is wearing thin and tensions have boiled over at the COP29 climate talks in Azerbaijan, which were due to finish yesterday but are now well into overtime. After two weeks of fraught diplomacy, the more than 190 countries gathered in the capital Baku are still trying to agree a new financial settlement to channel money to poorer countries to both curb and adapt to climate change.
