For an intelligence agent, it takes Cassian a shamefully long time to figure out that Jyn's avoiding him.
[long, rambling author's note below]
So, uh, this is actually the second story I wrote for this exchange...
I started off writing something completely different, got more than 5000 words into it, and then hit a brick wall head on. (I've promised to finish that story and post it as a second gift, so it will come eventually.)
The deadline was looming and I was desperate, so I returned to an earlier idea - writing a third installment in a series which I believe @coppernailpolish had enjoyed. Fortunately this flowed a lot more smoothly... but it just struck me that it's a little angstier than one might reasonably expect for a giftfic. Oh dear. /o\ If so, I apologize!
This was also the first Tumblr fic exchange I've participated in, and I found it a bit intimidating. I'm used to the anonymous style of exchanges where no-one knows who the authors are at first, which takes some of the pressure off. It was lots of fun sending & receiving little anon messages, though, and I found some great new people to follow, so that's a definite plus! Kudos to @therebelcaptainnetwork mods for organizing this.
Written for @coppernailpolish for the Rebelcaptain Network’s May the 4th Exchange! (In which I indulge all my fluffy impulses for my most tragic pairing.)
The first time that Jyn Erso meets Cassian Andor, she's three shots of tequila in and about to take a very stupid bet in the basement of the Resistance. (That's what Kes Dameron and his roommates decided to call their house for the year and honestly, she's heard worse.) However, it's a very stupid bet that she's going to win. Which is the important thing here.
She's on top of a pool table, readying herself to make her way from the basement to the attic without touching the floor—the floor is lava, obviously—when she notices the scruffy guy in the corner looking at her. He has a leather jacket on even though it's August and dark hair that goes every which way and looks like he can't decide whether to be amused or horrified at the debauchery going on around him. He raises one eyebrow. You're really going to do this? She stares back and for a minute, as their eyes meet, she feels a warmth in the pit of her stomach that has nothing at all to do with the tequila. He shakes his head, just a little. Seriously?
She narrows her eyes at him. He narrows his back. Jyn straightens her shoulders, jerks her gaze away from him, and readies herself to leap from the pool table to the couch. She doesn't think about him for the rest of the night. Really.
Summery: In an attempt to escape from the grasp of Unklar Plutt, Rey finds herself aboard the Finalizer and serving under the most notorious pirate in the New World: Kylo Ren.
This is a Pirate!AU Reylo fic that I thoroughly enjoyed reading. At 50K, it’s not a quick read but the author is a very thoughtful writer and she was very selective about every word in order to maximize the meanings that she’s trying to convey in the story. There are different layers and this story is like peeling an onion and the second read is as good as the first(I know cause I’ve read it twice).
Rey and Kylo are especially well realized, as is Finn and Phasma. They all have their motivations and goals and nothing(not even romance) is getting in the way of their ambitions. I especially like stories where romance isn’t necessarily the main through-line, but rather, how the characters effect each other’s lives outside of their building romantic tension. Copper_Nails is especially good at this kind of plot and world building(omg, can’t wait to rec you guys her phantom fic).
If you’re like me and prefer completed fic, I would suggest giving this story a try.
