I mailed out this fabulous custom envelope book to @thetamehuman this week.

I can’t thank her enough for her enthusiasm for the prototype book I made a few weeks ago. We decided on this great black and silver floral paper for the cover, with a selection of rainbow papers for the inside envelopes.

She told me a little about how she plans on using it, and I’m so excited to be able to facilitate her creativity with my own.

So a few months ago my dad gifted me a fizzgig, that I loving named Etta, but I thought the packaging was too pretty to waste! So I decided to turn it into a book! (TBH I can't believe it took me this long to think of this 🤣)

coptic binding

i experimented with coptic binding, using natural materials such as cardboard (re-used), paper and string. coptic binding was more challenging than the pamphlet stitch. this bind allows the book to lay flat, which is why i wanted to try it as i personally don’t enjoy is when images get lost to the gutter

i created five signatures, with five pages in each. i created six holes in total for the binding each 1inch apart, leaving a gap in the centre. i then bound the first signature to the back cover board. to do this i followed a tutorial with step by step instructions. to bind the signatures together in the book, you go inside the first hole to finish binding the one underneath. you then go from inside the one next to it, around the previous layer’s stitch, then from the outside back through the same hole

it became more simple the more i persevered, but at first it was confusing to get the hang of it, especially when connecting both the front and back covers to the signature. overall, i am happy with how it turned out, using draft materials

This notebook has made it to it’s final destination, so I can now share it here!

This is a hefty one, with lots of signatures and thick red wrappers. This was the first notebook that I made with lined paper, and I’ve learned so much since this first iteration. But looking back at the pictures now, I’m still happy with how it turned out.

Purple Flower Blossom Sketchbook

These grey asanoha design journals came out so beautifully.

I have two versions: one lined and one a dot grid. Both have the bookplate printed on the inside front cover.
