Canes Venatici, which is Latin for "hunting dogs," is a relatively recent addition to the skies. It was created by Dutch astronomer Johannes Hevelius in the 17th century, although it has its origins in some mistranslated Arabic texts. These are usually interpreted as Boötes' hunting dogs. The line art marks the southern dog, named Chara. The northern dog is unmarked, but it is named Asterion.

By the way, the name is pronounced "KAY-neez vin-AT-iss-eye."

In order of brightness, the two named stars in Canes Venatici are:

Cor Caroli (α Canum Venaticorum), a binary star system consisting of two blue-white giant stars about 100 light years away. The name is Latin for "Charles's Heart." The "Charles" in question is none other than King Charles I of England who was executed in 1649 during the English Civil war.

Chara (β Canum Venaticorum) is a solitary yellow Sun-like star about 27 light years away. Its name is the Greek word χαρά meaning "joy."

Canes Venatici looks away from the center of our Galaxy, meaning it contains many deep sky objects, including five Messier objects. The most notable is probably the Whirlpool Galaxy (M51).
