August Book Photo Challenge Day 16-One Word Title "Roar"-Cora Cormack ⛈🦁
Book Review: Roar-Cora Cormack
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
It’s rare for me to find a five star read these days, but this book was the perfect storm.
(Heh heh, see what I did there?)
I’m a sucker for storm powers so I knew I was in for something great when I read the summary.
Not going to lie, it was a rocky start for me. The first few chapters focus on Roar meeting Prince Cassian and their relationship, and I worried because it seemed to be one of those relationships where they fall head over heels for no reason. Also, in the beginning I found Roar very meek, unsure of herself and generally irritating. HOWEVER, once the tide turned and the plot started moving, everything changed. Roar turned out to be a very strong and witty character with her own set of skills. She didn’t spend the whole book curtseying and second guessing as I had feared. Cassian’ POV remained intriguing, and the re characters introduced along the way were very likable and interesting. I enjoyed the way the world unfolded and Roar learned about new aspects of magic in the same way we did. There were several moments when I feared a trope or plot point would go predictably awkward or whatever for effect, and the author usually managed to subvert those moments to something very unique and enjoyable. I have pointed out the similarity of this book to Heir of Fire (sarah J Maas). Roar’s relationship with Locke is nearly identical to that of Rowan and Aelin, even down to the training scenes. Of course, I love HoF so I’m not complaining. There were also similarities to Six of Crows in the fact that it centers mainly around a little team working outside the law and traveling together. Many of the side characters' humor reminded me of the Dregs. This really represents the best a first book in a fantasy world novel can be, managing to traverse much of the world and the mythology without being pedantic or boring or too shallow. I did kind of feel some aspects like the magic-powered car and the religious sect were a little out of place, but perhaps those aspects of the universe will be delved further into later. There are still many unanswered questions and I look forward to the next installment!
I’m really not one to give out five stars, so I highly recommend this one.
Some relationships just end. Like a star, they burn bright and brilliant, and then nothing in particular goes wrong, they just reach their end. They burn out.

So far this vacation I have read All Played Out and Off The Record. I didn't plan to read the rest of either of those series right away but I for see skipping the other books in the vacation collection I made to read them. 3 days In 2 books done.
I really hated lies. They're ugly things, festering like wounds, spreading like disease.
