A study in circles for Pi Day! This face-off between a round stingray and a Porites coral is a “who wore it best?” of circle-shaped sea creatures. The round ray goes big with a circle contour so clear it made its way into the critter’s common name. Meanwhile the Porites coral is composed of millions of radially symmetric polyps—a more subtle take on circles.
You can spot round rays swimming about our Aviary, and they’re a common sight in the waters off of Baja California. Which reminds us: our newest exhibit “¡Viva Baja! Life on the Edge” opens right around now! (March 19th to be exact).
