The Hike Of Death for my 40th birthday, way back in 2008. You have to apply for a permit to do this hike in Costa Rica’s Corcovado National Forest. You have a 5 hour window hours hike 16km along the coast to the ranger station. It’s the only legal and safe place to camp. You need to time the tide just right, otherwise you get trapped along the cliff walls and swept out to sea. In the last leg, you need to cross a tidal river infested with crocodiles. If you hit it at a reasonably slack tide, it’s about waist to chest deep and about 50 meters across. If you arrive late, depending on the tidal direction and ferocity, you end up with the water flooding up river and it can be too deep to cross, with great risk of being swept away, drowned or eaten by crocs. If the tide is going out, you can be swept off your feet and ripped out to sea. Even if you time it just right, crocs are always a risk. When I did the hike, I was late and it was raining and I pretty much had to swim across with two backpacks. Several crocs dropped into the water when I entered. I almost didn’t make it. I could not find the ranger station in the dark pouring rain, so I set up my Hennessy hammock and crawled in exhausted. About an hour later, I heard voices and saw a flashlight. Since I didn’t check in, the rangers came looking for me. I was less than 100 meters from the station. They helped me pull down my hammock and brought me back to the covered tent area where I met a few other people that had come in the day before. I managed to get some amazing photographs on that trip.
