Our felt sense - a core concept development

“A core concept within embodiment is developing and beginning to listen to our felt sense.  We experience this sense when we compile all the sensations our bodies are giving us to viscerally know something and create a much larger picture of what’s going on inside our whole selves.  Our felt sense . . . gives us feedback about how to be more deeply present to our physical bodies and attend to whatever they are telling us.”- Aundi Kolber

Aundi Kolber concludes Chapter 7 of Try Softer as she stresses that our bodies tell stories about our joy and our pain.  Furthermore, God created us to listen to the narratives our bodies tell us.

Therefore, Aundi advises, we need to understand just how integrated our bodies are.  Because we need to value our bodies the way God values our bodies.  For, as Bessel van der Kirk notes, our brains extend beyond our heads.  In a very literal sense, our brains are interwoven throughout our bodies.  Essentially, no distinction exists between mind and matter.  There’s only us.

So, we come to trust our bodies as we cultivate a felt sense.  That sense helps your body, brain, and spirit remain aligned in happy or sad situations.  And, in the process of trying softer, your felt sense assists you when you listen to, repair, and nurture the needs of your whole self.  Rather than helping you predict future feelings, this sense gives you insight into processing the world here and now.

Finally, Aundi exhorts, take the journey of learning to love your body – rather than asking it to perform.  Trying softer provides the foundation for this journey because your body is the home that  holds you.  And, growth and change only happens when you feel at peace in your own home!  Come home to your body so you encounter life in the truest way possible.

Our Core Concept

NARRATIVE SPINE: A look into his life, what got him into it, why he does it and how he became successful. 

CHARACTERS: A look into his home life, away from the studio and with his family. Stieg hanging out with his family, playing games, and gameplay footage. To show that’s he more then just a game making robot.

CONFLICT: Uncooperative employees, game deadlines, the anxiety of being head designer of a game, and how it effects his life at home.  CHANGES: From his first coordination of his big project. How did the experiences change him towards the job, the team, and made him better in job and as a person.

INCITING INCIDENT: He physically played DnD type games. It was a hobby that Influenced him into the game design major.  VISUALS: Will make strong use of interview footage with Stieg, as well as a good amount of B-roll camera footage, mainly comprised of shots of him working and such. This way, the audience can feel more of the connection between the man himself and his work. Additionally, we plan on using footage from some of the games he’s worked on as additional b-roll primarily to give context to which games he could be talking about at the time.

For my documentary, I am focusing on the career and works of video game designer Stieg Hedland-Fay, known for his work on the Diablo and Starcraft series.

ME AND THE PROECT:

This subject matter not only relates to my own interest in the gaming industry, but on a personal level as well. as Mr. Hedlund-Fay is the father of one of my best friends.

I have fairly easy access to the subject matter, thanks to living close by to his current residence, and as such I can interview not only the man himself, but also his wife and son, who have done work within the industry with him.
