This may be me being an archaeology graduate and an apprentice archivist but I wish people would quote their sources when sharing information in the pagan and witchy communities.

"The Celtic people did this..." When? Which Celts? Who said they did?

"This colour means this..." To who? Why? Is this meaning from personal experience, from a particular cultural background or just echoed from someone else on the internet.

And don't get me started on "you MUST do this..." Who says? Why?

I just can't help looking at things with a critical eye and I feel like I'm the only one who is questioning what other people share before incorporating them into my own belief/practice. Or just questioning them in general.

EDIT: I feel like I should add I have nothing against incorporating newly invented practices into my practice, but I want to know they are new, not said to be old when they really are not.

Spring Breakfast

An easy egg and toast meal to revitalize your Spring spirit.

Ingredients:

Eggs

Toast

Butter

Jam or jelly of choice

Milk

Salt (if you have any, go for that pink or violet salt)

Pepper

Paprika

Nutmeg

Hot sauce (optional)

Cheese (optional)

Directions:

I won’t both listing these out as I suspect everyone has their own preferred method of cooking eggs to which this can easily be applied. This is more of a guided meditation for when you’re cooking. Open the windows, play some music, and take some time for yourself this morning.

Starting with the eggs, a very simple symbol of life and rebirth, acknowledge the refreshing air and the hint of excitement in your chest. It may not be the new year and perhaps nothing at all has changed recently apart from the increasing sunlight pouring into your kitchen. And yet there is still a newness around you. Explore those feelings.

What are you excited about? What new projects have popped up in your life or your mind? What interests have you been craving to explore? The days yet grow longer. How will you fill them?

Breathe in the sunlight, the rain, the still chilly air. Let yourself feel cold for just a while longer before it’s whisked away by the summer heat. Dance or sing or hum to your familiar, comforting music.

When adding your salt, as naturally you would, cleanse your meal and your mind. Like wiping down the counter, this gives you a fresh workspace to start on. When adding the pepper, simply dismiss that negativity, that stagnation that may have accumulated over the winter months. Sweep the corners of your mind and let the light rush in. Don’t linger too long on what those negative energies might be.

Paprika is subtle and lingering. Use it to invoke lasting energy to accomplish your goals. Imagine that seed of excitement blossoming into the giddiness of accomplishment and progress. Know that your plans are realistic and you have the power to actualize them.

Nutmeg in eggs? Why yes, it is my preference but to each their own. Nutmeg is for a sweet touch, a smile when you work, and a little extra love in your heart. This and/or the cheese will attract joyful happiness along with the warming weather.

How will your goals bring you happiness? What is to be gain from them emotionally and spiritually? Imagine how you will feel not only succeeding, but during the process. How can you make the entire experience fun and enjoyable? What would bring you the most joy?

Now take a moment to step away from the self. As you make your toast and spread jam with the soft scratching of your knife, think back to your foundations. Where is your community? How do you interplay with them at this time in your life? How can you share these goals and joys with them? Happiness is best shared with loved ones.

Use the hot sauce as an extra kick in the ass, an energy boost. You don’t need to go running down your list of to-dos immediately, though. Right now your purpose is to feel relaxed, revitalized, and inspired. Take your time to sit and feel the bubbly energy coming with the change of season. Take time to fuel your body and look forward to the next step. Take the moment to refresh your spiritual energy.

Enjoy your eggs and toast with perhaps some fruit or tea. Indulge your spirit this morning. And remember to drink plenty of water!

Harnessing Energy

So, I started typing up an answer to this post on What To Do If Witchcraft Drains You and it sort of grew into its own thing.

Personally, when I do a ritual, I try to arrange it so that not all of the energy has to come from me. Harnessing different kinds of energy is how I do this. (Periodic reminder that my brand of hearth witchery is eclectic and varied.)

Moon Phase Energy

New Moon This energy is great for beginnings. Any time I want to set an intention for something, or plant something... if it’s at all possible to do it during the new moon, I do.

Waxing Moon Growth energy. Need to give something a bit of extra oomp? This is a great time of the lunar cycle for that.

Full Moon Full moon energy is all about fulfillment, accomplishment. It’s great for charging things up. Typically I find I have a lot of energy to spare for any energy work I want to do.

Waning Moon Anytime I want to get rid of something I try to time it with the waning moon. Banishments or cleanings work well with this kind of energy.

Each sabbat has its own energy, but in the grand scheme of things, the Wheel of the Year corresponds with the circle of the moon energy. 

Midwinter = New moon Midsummer = Full moon

Time of Day Energy

On the most basic scale, the energy from the time of day can mirror the energy of the moon as well.

Midnight = New Moon Noon = Full Moon

Are you starting to see why witches loves circles? They just kind of show up everywhere! lol

Elemental Energy

Using a representation of one (or more) of the elements can also help. A lot of my rituals and intent settings (basically spells I guess, but I have a thing about magic spells which I should probably write up a post on one day) include all four, tapping into the part of that element that I feel will best help with the energy I’m trying to harness. I like the completeness of using all four.

Here’s a super simple overview of them as I use them. Different traditions or paths may have their own energies associated with the elements. But this is what I’ve found works for me over the years.

Earth Grounding, enduring, stability

Air Changeable, inspiration, beginnings

Fire Destruction, passion, rebirth

Water Depth, emotion, purification

I’m not saying that tapping into these energies is going to magically (hehe I made a pun) make it so that you’re not tired after doing energy work. It’s called work for a reason. But like with any muscle, it does get built up over time. So the more adapt you become at harnessing small bits of energy, the more you’ll be able to tap into. Layering up sources can help as well so if I want to do something which is probably going to take a lot of energy, I try and line up things the very best way that I can.

Ostara is the sabbat of new beginnings and life. Fertility magic (especially through the use of eggs and garden and seed blessings are commonly performed during this time)
