mega slowbro cornets
1/21/26.
mmm and Yuki Furukawa join forces to bring this 7": Kehai b/w Yohō. I can't get either song out of my head. Yes, this does have sounds of Japanese pop, but more in line with the cornets and yumbo 7" we covered in July 2025.
Specifically, "Kehai" is just hauntingly beautiful. It kind of reminds me of Chris Weisman - just a lone guitar and haunting vocals. Yuri Furukawa wrote the music for both songs while mmm (Moe Ishii) wrote the lyrics for the 2nd, but sings both.
Check out mmm's music on Bandcamp. It tends more to Vashti Bunyan. On her most recent album, Tara Jane O'Neill lends guitar on one track. I spent quite a bit of time perusing mmm's collection.
But I kept coming back to this wonderful 7". I can't tell if this was self-released or released by a label. Both musicians are based in Tokyo, Japan.
so, i took a picture of my cornet, and i thought it looked cool so i editied it 🤷🏽♀️

When I think of great albums featuring horns, I often think of The Beatles' "Sgt. Pepper's", Arthur Russell's "Tower of Meaning", or, believe it or not, David Byrne's "Music For the Knee Plays". The lead track off of this 7" from two Japanese bands - cornets and yumbo - "nagareru" (ながれる) is absolutely gorgeous and has a memorable and beautiful french horn.
yumbo (Sendai, Japan) is yet another in a long line of gorgeous, subtle, Japanese pop bands. We first posted about them back in 2021; a wonderful 2 LP compilation released on Morr Music.
Here, there are just two songs (but a couple extras , but I can't get either out of my head. And unlike The Caraway single from the blue-very label, the shipping prices from Genjitsu Records are quite reasonable.

My cornets/yumbo 7" came in the mail today. Playing it just reminded me how much amazing music emanates from Japan. Just as I was thinking that, this amazing cassette, "Lightning High" from 1000s of Cats came to my attention (thanks Mawkish Twaddler).
Strictly speaking, 1000s of Cats are a US/Japanese duo composed of Sonoko Nebashi (guitar/vocals) and David Gatchell (drums/vocals). They've actually released music dating back to 2013. They continue in the great tradition of drummer/guitarist bands like Buick, The Spinanes, and Japandroids. They don't sound like any of those bands. But the spirit is there.
This is released on cassette (with a vinyl version promised) on mpls ltd. Last June, we covered the excellent Pearly* 7" released by the label.
Music to the Lord!
Psalm 98: 1, 4-8. O sing unto the LORD a new song; for He hath done marvellous things: His right hand, and His holy arm, hath gotten Him the victory. Make a joyful noise unto the LORD, all the earth: make a loud noise, and rejoice, and sing praise. Sing unto the LORD with the harp; with the harp, and the voice of a psalm. With trumpets and sound of cornet make a joyful noise before the…
