Break Me: I will write an angsty drabble about our characters.
Levi’s leg had become worse as of late, and the man knew exactly why that was. The younger male was like a shadow tailing Erwin around headquarters or to Sina; never once leaving his side unless there was an immediate need and due to such, he put quite a bit of strain upon his leg. That was one thing about Levi that bothered the commander was the sheer fact that he was so selfless, and that selflessness could at times, be self-destructive. After all, Erwin had caught the younger male more than once reaching to clasp thin fingers around the wounded limb, a flash of pain crossing normally listless features. Enough was enough, and thus one day, Erwin found himself speaking to the man within his office, the atmosphere solemn despite the usual serene air that lingered around the two when they were together.
Levi did not seem at all worried, but Erwin knew quite well that behind that apathetic expression, the younger male was uneasy. “What did you call me here for?” he asked, seemingly unfazed by the abruptness of the older man’s summons.
"You are to get more rest and starting from today, when I head off into town, unless I give a specific reason for you to come with me, you are to stay at headquarters.” There was a flash of something akin to surprise upon the other male’s expression, the corporal opening his mouth to say more, but Erwin was quick to hold his hand up to silence him. “Failure to follow this simple order will result in suspension. Do I make myself clear?”
Silence lingered, the two soldiers looking into each other’s eyes as if attempting to find something in that gaze. Eventually Levi spoke again, voice low with agitation. “What if something happens to you? You can hardly do much with one arm.”
"I'll be fine,” Erwin replied smoothly, tone betraying nothing but the usual calm that everyone was used to hearing.
"You say shit like that, but even you know how unpopular you’ve been. I wouldn’t put it past someone to try something.” Levi never pleaded, and never begged for Erwin to have him stay around him; however, years of knowing him told Erwin that this simple order had truly distressed the younger soldier. It pained him deep within his very core, even if he would not bend on this decision he made.
"I may have one arm, but I can take care of myself.”
Silence came once more like an old friend, surrounding the two and making the room feel suffocating. “….If something happens to you….I wouldn’t be able to forgive myself.” Guilt; Levi’s very being was inundated in it even if he did not show it; even if he appeared as if the losses around him had absolutely no effect on him. Ever since Erwin had lost his arm, the younger male seemed to make it his mission to take care of him to make up for not being there even if he could not have been by the commander’s side in his condition.
“I’ve made my decision, soldier. Follow it. That is an order.”
There was a flash of something that could only be identified as hurt appeared in the other’s eyes, perhaps there due to the fact that whenever Erwin put emphasis on the word ‘order’, Levi always obeyed. As quick as that emotion was upon the man’s features, it was soon as it was never there. It hurt Erwin to see it just as much as it hurt to give this order knowing why Levi was so protective. “…Yes, commander. I hear and understand…”
Behind that cold gaze he gave the younger male, Erwin gave a quiet apology he would never say.
