There is a certain way that the process has to go, Fox discovers.

Fives arrives on Coruscant, confronts the Chancellor, flees. Then at the appropriate hour, shows up at the same warehouse to meet with whoever he is dragging into his conspiracy theory this time.

Fox has heard the spiel enough times by now to believe that the crazed clone might actually be telling the truth. But he never lets him live long enough to see whether he can successfully convince anyone else.

Then the pattern changes.

Fox shows up at the warehouse, but only Fives is there, unarmed and seemingly waiting for him.

It takes a minute for Fox to process the difference, missing the moment Fives stalks forward to jab a finger at his chest.

“Commander, it’s time we had a talk. Would it really kill you to switch your blaster to stun for a change, as the regs say you’re supposed to? Because I’m getting real tired of you killing me. I’m trying to save you all here!”

Fox takes a careful step back.

“I know. Control chips in our brain, Sith in the Senate. It does actually make a lot of sense.”

“Wait, you’re looping too?”

“Yes.”

“Then why do you keep stopping me from telling anyone?!”

“I will let you soon, I promise. I’ll even help you. But I can’t risk the time loop ending yet. This is all going to cascade so fast, and my Corries are right in the blast radius. I can’t protect them if I’m barely hanging on by a thread already.

“Do you know what I’ve been doing with my repeating mornings? Sleeping for more than five consecutive hours. Eating something that isn’t a ration bar. Reading something that isn’t a report. Keeping weight off my ankle like the medics asked. For the first time in months I can think beyond tomorrow because I can keep tomorrow from coming. I have time and energy to actually start investigating the Chancellor’s schemes, and to start planning countermoves. We don’t know that we’ll get more than one shot at this, so we have to prepare while we can.”

“And you didn’t try telling me all this earlier, why?!”

Fox just shrugs and raises his blaster.

“This works.”
