Epic Cosmic JTTW Battle

In chapter six of JTTW, Sun Wukong faces Erlang in battle as cosmic giants:

The Immortal Master [Erlang] fought the Great Sage for more than three hundred rounds, but the result could still not be determined. The Immortal Master, therefore, summoned all of his magic powers; with a shake he made his body a hundred thousand feet tall. Holding with both hands the divine lance of three points and two blades like the peaks that cap the Hua Mountain, this green-faced, sabre-toothed figure with scarlet hair aimed a violent blow at the head of the Great Sage. But the Great Sage also exerted his magical power and changed himself into a figure having the features and height of Erlang. He wielded a compliant golden-hooped rod that resembled the Heaven-supporting pillar on top of Mount Kunlun to oppose the god Erlang (Wu & Yu, 2012, vol. 1, p. 181). 

Just like Erlang, Monkey is also described in his first cosmic transformation as a titanic monster:

Grasping the treasure [iron staff] in his hands, he began to perform the magic of cosmic imitation. Bending over, he cried, “Grow!” and at once grew to be [one hundred] thousand feet tall, [1] with a head like the Tai Mountain and a chest like a rugged peak, eyes like lightning and a mouth like a blood bowl, and teeth like swords and halberds. The rod in his hands was of such a size that its top reached the thirty-third Heaven and its bottom the eighteenth layer of Hell (Wu & Yu, 2012, vol. 1, p. 138).

So we have the equivalent of two Chinese Kaiju going full beast mode. I hope you know where I’m going with this...

@sketching-shark Their fight so very badly needs the same attention to detail and sound design as this breathtaking battle in Godzilla: King of Monsters (2019). Can you imagine it? The shockwaves from their respective transformations alone would likely fling the celestial armies away like a strong gust of wind a pile of leaves. Their mighty steps would make the earth tremble and break. Their mouths would issue flames or clouds and lightning as they breathe. Que the obligatory bottom-up view of fear-stricken deities watching as these cosmic Kaiju battle, the monsters seemingly moving in slow motion as their weapons clash, creating bright flashes of light and deafening sound. I picture this battle taking place during a great thunderstorm, and the clash of weapons are so powerful that they cause pauses in the rain or even drive away the rain clouds altogether.

Notes:

1)  Anthony C. Yu’s (Wu & Yu, 2012) original English translation says Monkey grows to be “ten thousand feet tall” (vol. 1, p. 138). However, the original Chinese source reads “萬丈” (wanzhang), wan meaning 10,000 and zhang being a measure designating ten Chinese feet (10,000 x 10 = 100,000). Therefore, I have changed the source to read “One hundred thousand feet”, much like Yu translates it in chapters six and 61.

For ten years the Titans, the children of Rhea and Cronus, fought with their siblings, the Olympian gods. The Titans were fighting from the mount Othrys, while the Olympians from mount Olympus. The battle was ambiguous and uncertain, there was no evident victor. It was Gaia that decided to help the Olympians by advising them to recover from the depths of Oceanus the three giants, the Hecatoncheires (those with one hundred arms). Empowered as they drunk nectar and ate ambrosia after coming back from their exile, the Hecatoncheires brought the victory to the Olympian gods. The Titans were then buried under the heavy rocks that the Hecatoncheires threw on them, and they’re still there buried in Tartarus, in the deep abyss. A copper wall is restraining them along with three layers of night. The Hecatoncheires are their guards. It is no exaggeration to say that our world would be different if the Titans had won the ruling of our cosmos. The Titans weren’t defeated completely though as many of their characteristics and attributions passed on the worship of the Olympian gods, nothing ever vanishes entirely.
