thoughts on Gusu Lan forehead ribbons

… or headbands, or mo’e, whatever you wanna translate 抹额 to.

We see at least three different variants in the show (going on CQL here), and I was having a think on what they might signify, especially since (iirc) nothing to the effect is mentioned in the novel.

Wait, you say, there’re different versions? Have some screenshots!

Lan Wangji, Lan Xichen, Lan Qiren, Lan Yi

And at first I was thinking, oh, okay, maybe it's about cultivation levels? Historically speaking, headbands and forehead ribbons have been used to demark different military units and -ranks just as long, if not longer, than they’ve been used for ornamental purposes. So thie idea that the better you are, the closer you are to achieving actual 仙 / immortal levels, the more elaborate your ribbon gets … would make sense. 

Only here’s Jingyi again, with random other juniors who wear the same type of forehead ribbon as the guard a few screenshots up – which kind of debunks my “okay, the better you do, the more elaborate the decorations” theory:

Maybe the other way around? Start out with the clouds-all-over-version until you reach the silver ornament stage? That would work (and I believe it’d grok with the Gusu Lan aesthetic).

But then I remembered this:

And much as I love Lan Wangji, I refuse to believe that he had higher cultivation at ~9 years old than Sizhui does at ~19.

So, what is it? Family? The main branch of the Lan family gets the ornament version, and the further removed from that you are, the fewer clouds you get? That would throw a wrench in a considerable amount of headcanons re: the social view of the familial relationship between Lan Wangji and Lan Sizhui … but it does make the most sense based on what we’re given in the show (and of the way Lan Wangji and Lan Sizhui interact in the show, though I guess if Sizhui is like baby!Lan Wangji, a case could be made for a parent-child-type of relationship … even though in that case, I’d’ve liked to hear at least one instance of address from Lan Sizhui to Lan Wangji that wasn’t “Hanguangjun”).

If anyone has any input on this, I would LOVE to hear it.

Sharing because I'm sure there are plenty of Leia cosplayers who would just LOVE to tackle this outfit.

And with the multiple angles, they could probably submit it to the Rebel Legion.

EDIT: I'm realizing there's extremely little to differentiate this with the ANH ceremonial dress- perhaps one that even RL may overlook.
