@chickthiccs and I were coming up with the hc that Mater is actually only half siblings with Mato. Same dad, different moms as the result of an affair. Of course Mater growing up didn't know that, but his 'mom' definitely knew, so she started treating Mater differently from Mato. And it eventually trickled down to Mato, too, and sparked their competitive streak.

Mater gets fed up with everything and runs away to his cousins in the south when he's 13, joins the rust bucket gang in the comics, and gets pseudo-adopted by Sheriff as a teen like in the comics too.

And of course Mater tells Lightning all this kinda lighthearted after the wedding in COTR who's just like 'we've known each other for 15 years and you're just NOW telling me this???'
