Law, Order and Pride WIPS

I'm not gonna have much time over the next week or two to work on this...so I figured I'd post some WIPS. Don't know why I didn't take a pic of the pencil art before I inked it... *shrug* I really, really wanted to color this traditionally, but I've gotta replace most all of my markers because they dried out in storage.

the thing about drawing tires/wheels is you gotta draw a donut then hammer it flat on two sides then you infinitely fold the donut hole into itself and the whole shape is actually just a square/cube from most angles but its basically just a rectangle

This morning, one of my friends linked me to this article about Lightning McQueen's planned appearance at the Goodwood Festival of Speed in July.

It's written in-universe, which is just *the most charming thing*:

Seven-time Piston Cup Champion Lightning McQueen is preparing to visit the Festival of Speed presented by Mastercard in 2026. Nine years after his major race victory at the Florida 500, McQueen will come to Goodwood to experience a very different form of racing to what he was used to in the Piston Cup 

But what really stood out to me is that the article states that Lightning McQueen won 93 of his 434 Piston Cup starts, which (I think?) is new information to me.

It's also a zany win percentage--21%, or an average of one win every five races!!!! The best to ever do it in NASCAR's modern era don't even come close to that, that's how zany that number is. (Though it's worth noting that Kyle Busch's win percentage in Xfinity blows this out of the water. No one will ever touch that--not over the number of races that he held it down.)

I wondered how they decided on 93 wins and 434 starts, because they're such specific numbers, so I had a think about it. And from all I can tell, these numbers are truly just a love song to stock car racing. It's so sweet. 😭

Lightning McQueen has:

7 Championships

--just like Jimmie Johnson, Lightning's racing contemporary who raced full time in the same generation (JJ: 2002-2020 // LMQ: 2006-2017)

93 Wins

--just like Jeff Gordon, icon of NASCAR's Y2K era and the years Pixar was getting off the ground. (Gordon's wins were spread over twice the number of races as LMQ/a career twice as long.)

21% Win Percentage

--just like Herb Thomas, driver of the Fabulous Hudson Hornet, a feat that has never been matched in the top series of NASCAR.

434 races also suggests that the Piston Cup season runs 39+ races a year, which is longer than the NASCAR's 36-race season (+2 weekends for the Clash and All-Star). 😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱

Can you imagine getting to end of a 39-race season and the Piston Cup is like "JK THERE'S GONNA BE A TIEBREAKER AND ALSO IT'S CLEAR ACROSS THE COUNTRY IN LOS ANGELES. FOR SOME REASON." Forget Chick, The King, and LMQ--think of the teams! The staff! That's how you really know your sport's got a stranglehold on the world populace.

I am positive at least one Piston Cup racer had their wedding set for that weekend and just like... had no choice but to rent a projector and play the tiebreaker mid-ceremony.

More context:

the first osprey is the father, the one that comes later is the mother.

ospreys are not eagles, they're ospreys

ospreys only eat fish, that's why they don't register this starling as possible food

the starling got home safely

the starling was not trying to eat the eggs, it was mostly curious and you can see it trying to hop under the osprey every time the osprey tries to sit down again--this is because the starling is still a baby and has the instinct to get under an adult for warmth, even though it mostly has its feathers. this scares the osprey because that is a Foreign Creature near its eggs.

at the end of the video you can see the ospreys starting to turn the eggs. birds do this so the yolk and/or embryo don't stick to the shell of the egg, which is bad for the egg's health.

ospreys have eyes adapted to seeing beneath the surface of the water!

Even moar context and a minor correction:

This nest is located in Hellgate Canyon, just outside of Missoula Missouri. The bird that initially is sitting in the nest is Iris, an osprey who has nested at this site for 12+ years and is the OLDEST breeding osprey in the world (est. 30 years). She calls out to her mate, Clark--I don't really like that name, but it won't the poll--to deal with the "threat."

I love how you can see actual confusion in Clark's face. Like he's thinking "I came in here expecting to have to fight off a bald eagle...wtf is this?"
