The sound of wet snow under her boots filled the air more than any words had in the last half-hour. There wasn't much room for it, the air thin and cold, the dim, gray light doing just the bare minimum to light up the snow-covered trees along their path. It was a mostly uphill trek from their cottage to the summit, and a quick descent once mounted on skis. Her own were red, strapped diagonally from hip to shoulder blade.
There was a part of Malle that wondered if she would have anything in common with Jacob Tierney after the island. She cared for him -- she loved him, with a sort of unequivocal certainty that surprised her -- but there was doubt in the unknown, unsteadiness in the differences that their lives were built upon. It was easier, on an island.
So she kept looking over her shoulder, or sideways, or sometimes glancing just a few meters ahead of her, to make sure that he wasn't frowning or frustrated. She half expected to catch his eye and see regret, a longing for his ship and the wide expanse of ocean. But so far --
Malle smiled as their eyes met, caught staring. The flush was high in her cheeks over her plaid scarf, dark brown hair pulled back in a long braid. "It's not much farther," she promised, her breath leaving a white cloud in the air. Caught between shyness and confidence, she reached out to hold his hand.

I am one lucky son of a bitch. Good things continue to happen. Happy. Healthy. Stability. This year is off to an incredible start.
