omg yes they are such gfs like it makes the most sense, why would she still have all her stuff after 6 years , and her looking at the photos of them together with Monica was like a 'oh we were in love' revelation type moment, and oh my heart breaks, because what if Carol thought it was unrequited but Maria didn't want to make assumptions cause Carol has memory issues about being human let alone being in love, and they had to save the world, their love is beautiful I stan, sorry lol

And yes it does explain a lot of things, particularly given that the air force was trying to cover up the accident. If Monica didn’t already have all Carol’s stuff (because they were living together) or at least have a key to Carol’s apartment, I would sort of expect that the air force would’ve kept it all in the hopes of just erasing Carol Danvers from the planet.
