Pride month post #1: Nonbinary and transgender representation in yandere fiction.

Something that I love about yandere fiction is the inclusivity and diversity that is so important to the genre, and is something that has been inherently tied to it from the beginning. You can't have a yandere without touching on mental health issues, you can't have their darlings without looking at unconditional love.

What is something about the darling that the yandere loves in spite of social norms, mental health struggles? Physical struggles? Dark secrets? If the darling doesn't have at least one of these then the story will fall flat.

Adrian Ellis (Fated Fixation duet) is a sociopath, something both books allude to quite heavily. Something which I found to be very well written in the series, and had me tuning in every time it came up to see what Delores would do with it that time.

And his darling? She is almost as ruthless as he is, cunning and cutthroat and fierce. She hurts people, kills people, and he loves her even more for it.

Erik (The Phantom Of The Opera) was born with some type of facial disfiguration, which is what made him into who he is in the story, and is used by the author, Gaston Leroux, as a commentary on society's treatment of people with disabilities as being less than.

And his darling? She is naive and trusting to a fault, and when she discovers the truth of Erik's deformity she hates him for it, rejects him completely and tries to run from him.

And he loves her anyway.

But Archivist, I can practically hear you saying, what does any of this have to do with nonbinary people? And to this I tell you.

We're getting there.

Because yandere fiction has a ton of representation, endless stories about mental health:

Depression/anxiety

Sociopathy/psychopathy

Split personalities/amnesia

And physical health:

Disfigurement

Disability

As well as social health:

Charming manipulation

Agoraphobia

Bribery

Bullying

But after all that when it comes to nonbinary and transgender characters? In video games and visual novels they are almost always the player character, in books they are all but none existent, and in other media? I can't say I've ever encountered any at all.

I do believe this to be in part due to the fact that the yandere genre is still relatively new, I also believe that part of it comes from nonbinary representation being lacking in all genres across all media, out of sight out of mind right? It could also stem from fear, people not wanting to portray nonbinary people in a "negative" light even if it's playing into a beloved trope.

Another contributing factor probably comes from the player character actually, if you already have one nonbinary character in your game you're probably less likely to include another because you don't want to have over representation either. And yet this careful balancing of representation has resulted in a significant lack of nonbinary yandere in yandere media.

At the end of the day this is all speculation though, I don't have any more answers on this matter than you do, though I'd still love to hear what you make of this phenomenon. Speaking of which if you know of any other yandere media with a nonbinary or transgender yandere character please send it my way, I would be absolutely delighted to add them to the archive. That being said, here's what I could find:
