this moment
was so incredibly important to me. thank you Brennan for reminding the audience again exactly what kind of person Vaelus is. do you remember the Faithful dwarven woman that they met on the road to Riesingürtle? the one who looked Thaisha in the eye and told her that the runes on the wall where she worshipped meant "Come Back" in reference to the old gods? everyday. everyday when Vaelus puts on every article of clothing she wears, from her wimple to her boots, she communicates the exact same thing. and we know this is a desire she has, because she's said as much. that after retrieving her sacred relic, when she could have and should have gone home to return it, she chose to follow Occtis all the way into the Eternal Night itself for the hope that one day he could bring Sylandri back. Sylandri who stood side by side with Azgra and all his cruelty for millennia, who thought he was worth avenging, and that Thaisha's people deserved extermination. Sylandri who tortured her own "children" for the sin following the Old Path, who punished the children faithful to her with injury for so much as the utterance of profanity, who willingly sought to give up those children to a fate of suffering for things to be righted as she saw fit. everyday, Vaelus mourns this person, and chooses to display that grief publicly, and in so doing blames the world for the state it's in.
I've seen a number of people theorize that Vaelus had something to do with the death of Sylandri. and this comes off as nothing more than pure cope to me. you're hoping, praying that this woman who seems so nice, so caring, absolutely blooming with slightly awkward charm, secretly isn't actually a bad person. that she doesn't really hold harmful views of the world. that she doesn't truly support one of the individuals who actively sought to genocide the people of other characters we care about. cope. because even if she did, all that would mean is that she regrets it, that she wishes she could take it back, that given the chance she would undo what she herself has referred to as a "mistake". and I don't know that that paints her in the best light either.
Y'all, I think Yanessa railing about "warlocks trad(ing) souls openly in the streets" just as the Soldiers watch a lux pull the street-corner preacher routine on the other end of town might be Brennan winking directly into the camera.
how life feels knowing we're getting a new critical role campaign 4 episode tonight, reunion edition
