How Crab Pots Works
Crab is very delicious and tasty seafood. All of us love the taste of a dip fried crab with chili and garlic sauce. But have you ever think of the process of catching crabs from the ocean?
The most effective way of catching crab is catching them with crab pots. Though there are so many traps to catch crabs, this is the simple and useful one.
So, a question can come in your mind that how a crab pot works? In this article, we will talk about how crab pots work?
How does a crab pot work?
After reading the full article, the working procedure of a crab pot will become clear to you.
What is a crab pot?
A crab pot is a trap to catch crabs from the ocean. It is designed like a squared or circled metal cage made of steel bars. It is enclosed by a metal net. The cage has one or several one-way doors which allow the crab to go inside but not to exit. It also has some tiny doors for the small crabs, which are illegal to catch. It allows them to get back to the ocean. There is a small chamber at the middle of the pot for the bait.
It allows these marine creatures to eat their favorite food bait before locking them up.
Pot Design
Before understanding the working principle, you need to understand the design of the pot.
A crab pot works like any other trap pots to catch other marine creatures such as lobster traps, prawn traps, and some minnow traps. The crab pot uses a system of nets inside a large cage which is made from metal. It is made of wire or flat metal mesh that is attached with steel bars.
The traps or pots allow crabs to get in but not let them out. This is done by carefully positioning the bait and "leads".
Netting the Catch
A crab pot is a large square and it is about 2 feet high and 8 feet wide. There is a slit at the side of the cage and this slit is the only entrance of the trap. The crabs think they have to crawl up the leads to get to their meal. When they crawl through the narrow entrance slit, they fall to the floor of the trap because the slit is so narrow to climb. The slit is suspended off the floor and that’s why it becomes impossible for the crab to get out of the trap.
Pot Size and Fishing
After the crab gets inside the trap, it starts to eat the bait. After eating the bait, it starts to find the way out from there. The trap becomes full as many crabs crawl inside the trap.
Some people use large pots to catch more crabs. Some people also use pots which have multiple entrances to catch a number of crabs in a short time.
Conclusion
The working principle of a crab pot is very simple and easy. You can easily understand it once you understand the construction of the pot. When you know it completely, you can also make your own crab trap according to your needs and requirements.

Black Tides – Log 2: Blackstone and Better Judgement Platform: Steam Deck Mode: Normal Format: No Commentary Video: Crab pots deployed, abnormal specimen caught, Blackstone Isle visited, dredging unlocked, and a key recovered at dusk (no commentary) With the debt settled, I needed something practical to focus on. The fishmonger still wanted two different crabs, so that seemed straightforward…

“Oh, the comfort, the inexpressible comfort of feeling safe with a person ~ having neither to weigh thought nor measure words, but pouring them all right out just as they are, chaff and grain together; certain that a faithful hand will take and sift them, keep what is worth keeping and with the breath of comfort blow the rest away.” *Dinah Maria Mulock Craik

How to Catch Crabs by Crab Pots?
Crabbing is a very interesting hobby. It is also a profession for so many people.
It seems like you have some interests growing inside about catching crabs that is the reason you are reading this article. And that is also the exact reason why I am writing this post, to show you the techniques.
There are some ways to catch crabs but catching them with crab pots is easier and efficient also. After reading the whole article, you will come to know how to catch crabs by crab pots.
Catching crabs by crab pots
In this article, I will talk about the process of catching crabs with a crab pot.
Equipment
You need some specific equipment in order to catch crabs with a crab pot. Such as:
Cooler to keep the crabs
Fold up chair to sit while you wait
Crab Trap. There is various type of traps available in the market. You can choose any of them as your requirements.
Bait for the crabs
Thick gloves to hold the crabs
Strong ropes
buoy as a marker for the crab pot
Additional weight to sink the pot.
Choosing the best area for crabbing
Crabs are found in the saltwater of seas and bays. They are also found in brackish water also known as tidal water. Saltwater marshes, bays, inlets, and the ocean are included in them. Crabs also love to stay near underwater structures such as pilings, bridges and sunken shipwrecks. Considering all these factors, choose the perfect place for catching crabs.
Types of bait
Crabs won’t get attracted towards the trap until they found the bait interesting. So, it is very important to choose the right bait for the crabs which they will find interesting. Here I will give you some suggestions for proper bait:
Dead fish
Dead fish can be a great bait for the crabs. Bunker, snapper, sea robins are good fish baits. Cut the fish in medium size pieces. The smell of the cut fish will attract the crabs.
Hot dogs
Hot dogs are not so popular as bait because a crab can easily eat it. Though you can use this as your bait because it is much cheaper as a bait for the crabs.
Chicken
Chicken is very popular as bait for crabs. They are strong enough for crabs. They cannot just take it away. Cut the meat into thin long pieces to use as bait.
You can use any of these three as your bait or you can use your own idea to set the bait as well.
Setting the trap
Now it’s time for setting the crab pot. After you prepare the bait, tie it with one end of a rope. Tie the other end with the door of the bait box. So, when the crab will try to eat the bait, it will be trapped inside.
Without putting some extra weight inside the pot, it will not sink properly under the water. So put some weight inside the pot.
Secure the trap
When you put the trap into the water, the strong tide can take it away and it will move from your desired crabbing place. So, the trap needs to be secured. To do it, tie the cage with a strong rope and tie the other end of the rope with a stable platform such as your boat or ship.
Set a marker
It will be very hard to find the exact spot of the pot without any marking. You can use a buoy as a marker. The white and blue buoy is known as crab pot markers. You can use them or you can use as you like.
Place the trap in a water current
Now it’s time for putting the trap inside the water. Crabs love to stay at the place where there is more water current. Put down your pot slowly into the water. If you hurry to do this, it can alert the crabs under and they will leave the place. So, be careful while putting the top under water.
Conclusion
Catching crabs with crab pots is not a very hard and tricky job to do. You can also do it by following some simple rules and with proper equipment. So, you are reading the final part of my article that means you have read the whole article. I hope now you will be able to catch crabs with a crab pot easily.
