Crabbing is a great fun activity for a family holiday. This is famous in the northern coast of the USA. But almost everywhere people love to catch crabs.
It is a great feeling to return home from the coast with some crabs. Crabs are famous around the world for the delicious flavor it has. Though some people do it as a hobby some do it because catching crab is their profession.
Catching a crab is not like catching a fish. You need a crab trap to catch crabs. Traps can differ according to their design and necessity. In this post, I am going to introduce you to different types of crab traps.
In this article, we are going to talk about different types of crab traps:
Among all the crab traps, box crab traps are the most common one. People love to use this trap because they can use it very easily.
This trap has multiple entrances. It is made of steel wires. Steel wires make this trap very efficient and long-lasting. The trap is cube-shaped.
Though the trap is a little heavy and bulky in size, people love to use this because of the crab storage facility in the trap. But sometimes they found it difficult to carry to the coast because of the weight.
In a ring crab trap, there are rings and a large metal ring. Both of the rings are bind by a net which is built with metal wire. The large opening of the trap allows the lure to attract the crabs properly.
Carb catchers from the coast of Washington love this type traps. This type of trap is best for use in the river mouths and in the bays which are protected. But you can also use it in the open sea if you want.
You can easily guess the shape of this trap from its’ name. the whole trap is made from steel wire and it looks like a pyramid.
The bait is placed in the middle of the pyramid. When the crab enters into the pyramid, the trap entrance closes automatically. The main benefit of this trap is, you can use this trap in the open sea even when the tides are so big and strong.
Maryland crab pot is made of steel wires just like the other three types of traps. Generally, there are four openings in this trap. Each of the openings has a bait inside. When the crab gets inside the entrance, it shuts instantly and the crab gets trapped.
There are a very few differences between the Maryland crab pot and west coast crab pot. The basic working principle of these two traps are similar. The only difference is, the two openings of this trap is shaped like a tunnel. The bait is placed inside the tunnels. When crabs get inside the tunnels in search of baits, they get trap inside them.
Trotline crab fishing is now used very rarely. After the invention of crab traps with pots, people started to forget this method. It is used vastly between 1870 to 1929.
You will find some old crab hunters using this method but for some recreational purpose. Because other methods are more efficient and easy to apply.
Each of the crab traps has their own benefits and usefulness. You can choose any of the traps to catch crabs. It totally depends on your choice and requirements.
