The Homestead Porch Sewing Projects
There's been a whole lot of sewing going on with the recent opening of The Homestead Porch pop up shop in my new state of Tennessee!
It only took me about a year to get settled, meeting new friend groups and finding my way around without the help of maps. But now that I'm settled I knew it was time to get hustling again, so I started by opening a crafting group on the meetup app.
After holding monthly classes here in my home for about six months, and realizing meetup was raising their rates to almost $30 a month (no thank you! I'd prefer to make money to teach, not pay it!
So I put out a note on facebook asking for anyone interested in a soap making class and holy moly was I hit hard with the reality of how many people here in middle Tennessee are looking for home arts classes!
Within an afternoon my email list grew to 150 and by the time I went to bed it was at 200. By the next morning I had about 330 emails to enter into my email list. That's when I realized not only was there enough interest for a class, but I needed to figure out how to automate my email list or I'd never get anything else done!
Thankfully God sent a random angel to a local coffee shop to help me transfer all those emails into an automated system with just a few clicks. What he was doing was beyond my technical understanding, but he did it in just a couple minutes.
I ended up adding a second class, starting a website, adding quick links to my social media with the help of my daughter, then figuring out how to sign people up for future classes through a website that also takes their payments. This will save me hours of work in the future!
So back to all these sewing projects...
I decided to hold the first pop up shop at that first soap making class and although the weather kept me from using the actual porch, I found a way to set it all up in the house. And it was a big hit!
Showing all these products is actually a great advertisement for future classes, because I teach how to make them all in future classes.
Next up, watercolor classes for kids and adults in March, sourdough class for adults and teens and jewelry making for kids in April. And of course all my products will be set up at the hosting venues!
Final Watercolor Class Show and Share!
Our final Whimsical Watercolor class occurred on Sunday and we had so much fun, it was ridiculous! So much laughter and happiness while getting creative, makes the walls of the art studio sing with delight!
We wrapped up with a “show and share” of mandalas and all the different designs you are able to create. Not one was alike! And talk about so much color and vibrancy!
After our show and share, we decided to take the rest of the time creating colorful birds and envelopes from our scrap stash. Talk about a great time! We went through all of our scraps, both collected and hand painted from previous projects, and constructed adorable collaged little birds to decorate oragami envelopes. A great way to use up what we had in our stash, while making something super productive and useful. We were figuring that we could use these envelopes as gift card holders, treat holders, decor in our creative spaces, journals and all sorts of uses!
I’d love to share a photo with you but considering I didn’t take any because I was crying laughing the entire time, I’m sure you understand!
For some bonus fun that was completely over the top, I created a few little animal themed paper dolls, which totally creeped everyone out (in the most hilarious way!) Think “Flat Stanley” but with sheep and deer in dresses!
Paper Houses from Scraps and Recycled Paper Board
Wednesday is always a fun day with our weekly art club!
Each week, the project changes based on what the ladies are interested in. Some weeks we paint, others we craft. The past couple of weeks, we’ve been interested in working on creating houses from recycled elements.
Using cardboard from packaging, cereal boxes and our ever growing scrap paper basket, the ladies and I worked on some super adorable and creative houses this past week.
