Attila is in Atilinya country....an ancestral spirit who is said to live in the springs in and around the mountain" Tamara's practice engages with the natural environment recreating the images and shapes in her embroidered works in both 2 and 3D form. Her work looks at slowing down and portraying her concerns around social issues including the environment, climate change and the treatment of asylum seekers. Craft Contemporary (1–31 October) is Craft Victoria’s annual festival amplifying the practice of craft in a state-wide gathering of talks, live demonstrations, exhibitions and more. Contemporary expressions of craft are explored within gallery, retail, educational and public spaces, calling attention to its ubiquitous and engaging presence. @craftvictoria ・・・ REINVENT ONLINE WORKSHOP This online workshop by textile artist Tamara Russell is designed to address the 6,000 kilograms of used but still wearable clothing that goes into Australian landfill every ten minutes. Holding on to your clothes for at least nine months longer reduces the water, waste and carbon footprint by up to 30 percent. Refurbishing the clothes you already own enables you to express creativity and individuality while reducing your impact on the environment. This workshop will run online with two sessions. Participants will use various forms of fabric, paints and stitch to create their own individual designs. Following a break for lunch to allow the paint to dry, participants will continue in the afternoon to embellish their clothes using craft techniques taught by Tamara. Attendees will be able to choose to use embroidery, sequins, buttons and other reinvention embellishments. This workshop is suitable for both beginners and more experienced stitchers. Participants will receive a kit by mail before the workshop including paints, brushes, embellishments, threads and other materials. In case ya missed the news earlier today, I’m at Clay LA this Sunday at @craftcontemporary! I checked out the benefit sale last year and loved all of the ceramicists’ work and had fun chatting with the artists. I immediately knew that I’d apply to participate the following year.
