Me and my plastic Jesus are sitting inside by the fan in the sweltering heat of 20c, 90% humidity; the fog has lifted just enough to make a nice little oven with bars of sun light coming through. Its not so much the heat as the humidity baking us and not a whisper of wind. Even the dog said ‘too much’ swelter and left the work crew even though they are doing his favourite thing -- dragging brush. He’s great at it if you help him get a good bite and then throw his high up on the pile. It makes the dog very happy to be part of the work crew. He is one of these dogs that needs a job and I really feel sorry for him since we have been in the city. His job has been reduced to growling at tweekers, keeping cats out of the garden or four times a year, we send him under the house to clear out any roosting vermin.
Moved some mallows in an attempt to save them from being crushed. Some of the things like the cowslip, primroses and oxalis are either going dormant or will just have to take a beating. I am hoping that they will have enough time to get the Lady Banks rosa off the house and the neighbor and even cut back the butterfly bush. I can do the hedge of fuchsias later on my own terms. One of them produces berries every year. I am not fond of the taste of the berry fresh but this year I would like to dry and put in an herbal tea blend I am making. My last permiculture garden had the camillas for tea. Maybe when we move the asian pear this winter, I will get a couple of them to have here.
The nettles are starting to bloom and lay over in the pathway. They are nobody’s friend in this state so I will cut them back harshly and see if I can’t get a second cropping out of them.
Its official: I have killed the balsamic fir I was trying to bonsai. I had it outside and we had a day of heat AND sun that just fried the little guy. The little apple I am bonsai, is still doing well but did not have the same strenuous training I had on the fir. I should have had him under shade cloth still. I really dislike when I do that -- it feels neglectful. Maybe if people didn’t give me their dying plants to resurrect, I would feel so bad.
Cleaning out a grow box for Autumn garden. My boxes are getting on the rotten side so now the thoughts are to build again or just put it in the ground w/o borders? I like the box because it gives boundary for dog and feets but then again, w/o box, there are no bug nesting spots. I’ve seen people use upside down bottles (like wine bottles) but I have picked up too much broken glass and nails and trash from this place to want to give it a go. You know you have a problem when you are digging up old reel to reel gay porno films and have to explain THAT to the kids.
Got some empty pots from craig’s list; what a wild place! But for as often as I use that platform, it works for picking up freebies or barter and trade.
This evening I hope to get to Africa. I have a bottle of bleach I need to put in the rain water cache tank.
