This is a great New Pornographers song with some good whistling. You really can’t mistake Neko Case’s voice for anyone else. I’m pretty satisfied waking up with this song.

That strange affliction; The running of the blade against your skin, The needle in the niche of your arm-- --Remember when the nights were dark And the mornings bright?

Now the stars burn, And the sun disappears as soon as it rises.

The warmth is the only thing that reminds me I’m alive-- --Or is it the shaking sensation I get When I wake in a sweat, Tangled in the sheets On the floor?-- --Not that the fall was too great  (Mattress on the floor,   Gun under the pillow)  --

But that’s not the fall that should be worried about.  Turn those blind eyes towards the sun. 

There’s a finger on the trigger, And the air is growing thicker, And whether it’s because of the cement in my skull Or the smoke from dying cigarettes, I’ll never know, But that smudge on the window spells out my fate, The one where I find my answers While also losing all else.

I get what I want, But lose what I need, And like a cork from a bottle I’ve popped, Been unscrewed at the hinges.

I can feel the gears creaking to a halt, And the longer I lay here, Face pressed to the cool linoleum flooring, The greater the pressure grows, And soon I wonder if my veins are to spill forth: Blood from my nose and Mouth and Ears and Eyes and--

... There’s something wrong. The needle lays beside me on the floor, Smiling with the glisten of the sun...

Maybe I’m to die here-- --Lie here-- Wishing and washing my internal organs with medications that do not bear my name, But heed warnings of over- and improper use, And the effects that come when mixed with other vices-- But it’s so easy to roll a bill, Or take a pill, And find yourself traveling down the line  Down, way down. 

The lights grow dim And whether they’re in my head Or flashing outside my window-- --... I will never know.

The night is dark again; The sun a deafening white burn.
