1 August 2016- On The Hood

I woke up with some old Matt Mays this morning! And what a great summer song! A few years ago, I saw Matt Mays play in a dive of a bar in Calgary, Alberta and it was loud. Plus, he had been part of a bar brawl the night before and had swallowed broken glass. It was still a great show. Now he plays regularly down the shore where you can eat lobster and steak.

31 July 2016- Crash Years

This is a great New Pornographers song with some good whistling. You really can’t mistake Neko Case’s voice for anyone else. I’m pretty satisfied waking up with this song.

30 July 2016- O My Soul

I definitely woke up with Big Star this morning because we were listening to them not too long ago. “You're really a nice girl, and I think you're the most.” I like this song.

29 July 2016- Spiderwebs

This song reminds me of my first undergraduate degree. A nice ode to the ability to screen phone calls via voice messaging technology. Call display is so much more convenient.

I woke up with these folk singers this morning. It’s a good song. “Cathy, I'm lost, I said, though I knew she was sleeping. I'm empty and I'm aching and I don't know why. Countin' the cars on the New Jersey turnpike. They've all come to look for America, all come to look for America.”

Oh, hey, Kanye West. I can’t believe it’s been 10 years since this song was released. I suspect Pamela Anderson would legitimately be this frustrated with Kanye... and that’s saying a lot.

26 July 2016- Wild World

When I was on an exchange in Oxford I had a friend who off-handedly commented that he wanted to listen to Cat Stevens sing Wild World... and I had a copy with me. From then on he’d periodically just drop by my house with a song request and I always had what he was looking for... it was some sort of strange magic.

It’s Monday and I’ve woken up with Toto. They used to play this song a lot at the roller rink, but I didn’t remember the weird colonial video. I especially like when he just stares blankly after a spear has knocked over some books and an oil lamp (at 3:17). ah, well, let it all burn

20 July 2016- Sugar, Sugar

I woke up this morning with more sugar. This song has a Canadian connection too-- co-writer Andy Kim is from Quebec. Who knew!?! Also, are kissing booths still a thing anywhere anymore?

19 July 2016- No Sugar Tonight

I woke up with some more Canadian content. It’s nice for The Guess Who that radio stations would occasionally confuse them for The Who and give them more air time. The song creates a nice quodlibet near the end.

18 July 2016- Eyes Of A Stranger

I saw the Payola$ open for Sloan at the Calgary Stampede a few years ago. At the end of the set they invited the crowd to join them in the beer tent. I don’t think they realized how much of the crowd was actually there to see Sloan... and were mostly satisfied just to hear them play this song.
