Creative Influence - part 2
Creative Influence - part 1
Creative Influence
Creative influence is the conscious or unconscious inspiration taken from another artist and their work. It is embracing the knowledge that every idea is inherently connected to a greater pre-existing discourse (Taylor, 2007, p. 4). My architectural paintings give consideration to the degeneration of the intricate craftsmanship of historical buildings and their fleeting narratives that can be brought to the fore through their representation. In doing this, I knowingly affiliate myself with other artists: the conceptual practice of Dina Brodsky is concerned with New York buildings, their past inhabitants, the memories held within their walls, deterioration and decomposition.

Creative influence examines the way an artist’s research and exploration into other works informs their personal artistic practice - “…there is no end to ‘influence’” (Bloom, 1997.) Through an audience’s examination of artistic works, many choices appear to have been informed by works that inspired or aroused curiosity in the practitioner. As a playwright, I examine a range of texts specific to my thematic concerns while also drawing inspiration from works I admire, to form a cohesive understanding of my influences as an artist. This is exemplified in my reflection on my short play 'Ain’t That Poetic’, wherein I examine my own creative influences and the ways in which they informed this work.
Creative Influence refers to the ‘inspiration’ and ‘motivation’ one can receive from a person, and their work. Dr Mark Batey’s ‘Extrinsic’ motivation, or taking inspiration from the works and ideas of others, helps to elicit progress and motivate new creativity within ourselves (2006). As Jimi Hendrix said, ‘We stand on the shoulders of the giants who came before us, learning and building from each other’s ideas’,who funnily enough developed that quote from the findings of Sir Isaac Newton ‘If I have seen further it is by standing on ye shoulders of Giants’.
