The galaxy is dangerous, and from 2400 to 2410, the scene of galactic politics had been strained, breaking, and eventually the major powers of the Alpha, Beta and Delta quadrants had been pulled into all-out war. Though the Iconian War has been over for almost a decade, Starfleet has learned many hard lessons from it.
As such, body armors are standard fare on away missions, and they vary in make and function like any other set of Starfleet tools. This has not been without non-military benefit, however, as the development of these armors has offered new insight and innovation into environmental suits and zero-gravity maneuvering.
Several of the environmental suits and armors utilized by Starfleet as of 2420 are shown. Listed from top to bottom, they are described by common function and association.
This was the standard Federation zero-gravity suit from the mid 2370s up through late 2409.
This suit, named the Solanae Suit, was developed from technology discovered inside the Solanae Dyson Sphere in the Delta Quadrant and is now widespread for zero-gravity/hazardous environment work.
The Borg resurfaced in 2409 and have since been a grave threat to the Federation, prompting the reinstatement of MACO and this specialized armor for elite MACO troops in making assaults aboard Borg vessels.
The Omega armor was developed in tandem with MACO armor to aid forces defending against Borg incursions planetside.
This armor was designed to combat the Undine (better known perhaps, as Species 8472). The Undine are incredibly powerful with psionics, so the armor is built to protect against telepathic assaults and gravitic shifts in addition to the standard kinetic and energy weapon defenses.
The most recent armor set to be developed by Starfleet sees more broad use. It was developed to protect Starfleet personnel from the overpowered energy weapons utilized by the New Terran Empire in the parallel universe.
In addition to armor, personal energy shields are even more widely deployed among Starfleet and the other super powers. Despite these protections, casualties can and do happen. Care and alertness are still and will always be the greatest protections any member of Starfleet can possess.
The uniform of the 25th century is the product of the evolution of Starfleet and its mission. In the Terran year 2410 the “Odyssey” uniform, named for the ship on which it was first made standard, debuted. It integrates elements of the most iconic uniforms of the late 23rd and 24th centuries, showcasing Starfleet’s naval roots while emphasizing their primary mission of exploration over that of the more militaristic “Sierra” uniforms of 2400 through 2409.
Uniform accents follow the color coordination of the 24th century (red for command and tactical, gold for operations and engineering, and blue for the sciences and medical), but the Starfleet combadge over the left breast also serves to mark their department, using the department symbols of the mid-23rd century.
Though they are lighter in color than their predecessors, the current dress uniforms are almost visually identical to the uniforms of the late 23rd century, dubbed by some historians as ‘Monster Maroons’ due to their color scheme and bulk.
Several variants of the uniform are not shown here, including the Chief Medical Officer’s uniform variant, enlisted uniforms, and a specialized tactical uniform designed for enhanced comfort when wearing body armor and ease of access to weapons and combat devices.

Frequently shifts appearances because it's the future and who says that technology can't exist, mostly gender-oriented but sometimes otherwise.

Somehow ended up shunted from a planned course to ships counselor to a leadership position.
Still tinkers in part to relieve own stress and likes to set lots of policies and programs to ensure the mental health of the crew, though they're usually based more in science than in -- well, there was the one time they set out coloring books but they swear there's research to back that up as a stress-relieving activity, they don't care WHO says otherwise. RESEARCH.

Always looks a little like they're rushing somewhere even when there's nowhere to rush to.
No seriously, who thought giving this person control of the ship was a good idea, I mean they do a good enough job (they hope maybe oh god maybe not) and they're great in moments of crisis but privately they're pretty sure they always look like they're staring down a warship.
At least, that's their perception. That might not be what they actually look like. But they can imagine that in their own head. Pretty much perpetually.
Likes to avoid conflict if it can be helped but if it can't and diplomacy fails then so help you they will absolutely flatten you if absolutely necessary.
Best described as: a grown-up's version of a kindergarten teacher, complete with perpetually strained-and-or-tired smile, overt enthusiasm, and the scariest teacher-captain's voice if you actually manage to cross the line there.
KORRA CREW PROFILE: OWEN SULLIVAN
Owen Sullivan joined the crew a while ago as a storyboard revisionist. He worked really hard, quickly adapted to our storyboarding style, and learned our production system so well that we promoted him to assistant director. You can see some of his great storyboard drawings from Book 2 Book 3 above, and you can see him in a fantastic Mako costume here and here. I asked him a few questions to give you guys some insight into one of the many talented people we are lucky to have working on Korra, and how he got here.
BK: What is your art education background, formal and/or informal? Are you currently taking any classes outside of work? OS: I originally intended to be a civil engineer, which I went to school for. I never went to any formal art school, but took a lot of classes around Los Angeles, mainly at the Animation Guild and at the Concept Design Academy. I am currently taking a class at CDA and one with the very talented April Connors, who teaches out of Glendale. BK: How long have you been working in the animation industry? Did it take you a while to get your foot in the door? OS: I’ve been working in the industry for about 3 years. After deciding engineering was not for me and moving to Los Angeles, it took about a year and a half of very concentrated work for me to find a job. BK: Describe your position on Korra and what work it entails. OS: As an Assistant director on Korra, I help implement the changes that the Director and Producers want. Additionally I help Director Mel prep the final storyboard to be sent over to Korea. If there’s time I like to take a section of the script to board as well. BK: What other productions have you worked on? OS: Before coming to Nickelodeon, I worked at Warner Bros Animation, on Young Justice and a number of their direct-to-video movies. I’ve also done some freelance boards on Ben 10 and Ultimate Spiderman. BK: What is the most common thing people on the outside of the animation industry don't know about your job? OS: Probably that we do not actually animate the episodes here in the States. My friends outside of the industry usually just call me an animator. BK: Do you have any interests or hobbies outside of animation? Do they feed back into your work in any way? OS: I love to draw, I sketch constantly, all the time. I hope this helps my work... I watch a lot of films and play a lot of video games. I enjoy hiking, snowboarding, surfing, running, etc. It’s good to balance sitting at a desk with some outdoor activity. Also we’ve been playing a lot of ping pong here at Nick. BK: Any advice you'd like to offer for aspiring artists? OS: Get around other artists, draw as much as you can. Take some classes. A good teacher or talented friends can help you learn a lot faster than you will on your own. Try not to get discouraged and keep at it!
