Nightmares with Diego Hargreeves Headcanons

You don’t tell Diego about the nightmares for as long as you can. You don’t want to add more stress to his life.

Diego figures it out eventually. You’re more withdrawn than usual. You’re listless. You doze off constantly but you never sleep for long. 

He takes you aside and crosses his arms, looking a little pissed and very intimidating. “You wanna tell me what the hell is going on with you?”

“...nothing?”

At first, he bristles because it’s painfully obvious you’re keeping something from him and he doesn’t handle that well. But you look so damn tired that he softens, steps a little closer and brushes his knuckles along your cheek. “I haven’t seen you smile in weeks, babe. That’s not nothing.”

You spill everything and he listens without interruption, holding your hand tighter and tighter the more you talk.

When you’re finished, he nods, cups his hand to the back of your neck, and pulls you into his chest, holding you for what feels like hours. He doesn’t know what to say and it frustrates him to feel so helpless but this is the best he can do.

Finally, very, very quietly, Diego says, “Why don’t you stay at my place tonight?”

“Maybe because...you’ve always spent the night with me? I’ve never even seen where you live.”

Diego is a little nervous at first just because he wants to do right by you. He tries to make his room as inviting as possible with plenty of comfy pillows, some soft white noise in the background to drown out the city sounds. When the nightmares come and you wake in a cold sweat, hyperventilating, and absolutely terrified, Diego has all the lights on in a heartbeat. Hurt!Reader and Protective!Diego Hargreeves Headcanons

When you get hurt, Diego hardcore Freaks Out™. Holding you close and kissing the top of your head, whispering over and over, “No, no, no, babe, stay with me, please stay with me.”

Waking up in the hospital, you find Diego asleep by your bed, his hands wrapped around your hand, his head resting on the mattress next to your hip.

Diego stays by your side in the hospital every minute he possibly can, even though he paces A LOT and drives you absolutely insane.

“Stop throwing knives into the ceiling, Diego. The nurse is going to kill you.”

Diego huffs and slouches in his chair, crossing his arms. “That would be a nice change of pace. At least it would give me something to do.”

Heaven forbid you try to carry in your own groceries!!!! Diego knows you’re perfectly capable of doing it yourself. But he doesn’t want you busting stitches or hurting yourself again.

Mornings with Diego Hargreeves Headcanons

Diego is usually busy being a badass vigilante superhero all night long. Which means he sleeps pretty late. You’re the first one up, well before him.

He loves it when your fingertips wandering over his bare back is the first thing he feels in the morning.

Unless you wake him up too fast or too early. Don’t do that. He gets Grumpy™. 

When you try to get up, he wraps an arm around your waist and won’t let you go. He holds onto you like you’re his teddy bear and he buries his face in your neck, peppering your skin with sleepy little kisses.

On the rare occasions when he’s the first one to wake up, he cups his hand to your cheek and just watches you sleep, relaxed and safe with him.

Diego likes to watch you in the morning, walking around his living space, getting ready for the day. Bonus points for wearing one of his shirts tossed over your underwear. But he really, really loves it when you’re comfortable enough to wear nothing at all.

It takes a while for Diego to fully wake up. He sleeps lightly, in case anything goes wrong. But when he knows there’s no danger, he’ll wallow in unconsciousness for a long time. Refuses to open his eyes or attempt to form words no matter how much you might pester and tease him.

He does NOT like morning conversations. At all. His brain is nowhere near a proper functioning level yet. Unless you’re whispering dirty/sweet things to him. Then he’s okay with it.

Hargreeves siblings and art class

Luther Doesn’t like most of art class. Paintbrushes are too small and make him feel clumsy. Clay sculpting is too fiddly and delicate. But he takes a liking to stone work. With a hammer and chisel in his hands, even the smallest details are a welcome challenge.

Allison Modern day French Impressionist painter. Her works have been mistaken for Monet and Renoir. Pastel colors, loose brushstrokes that, when viewed at a distance, merge to create a brilliant scene that makes the audience feel as if they’re in the middle of it all - the gleam of champagne glasses and the crinkle of ladies’ skirts at a picnic outing in the park. Also has an eye for fashion design illustration as well as phenomenal sewing skills.

Klaus No one knows what on earth he’s painting but it makes sense to him (supposedly). Surrealist subject matter that can range anywhere from frightening ghost faces and bloodied body parts to flying fish and purple whales.

Diego Splatter painting and using palette knives for spreading color around. Works on huge canvases that take up the entire floor and he’s covered in paint from head to toe by the end of an hours-long session. Secretly really good at sketching human figures with thick, black lines of charcoal and a soft, rosy selection of pastels.

Ben Graffiti genius. Bold, glaring, screaming color choices. A master at sidewalk chalk art. Creates mind-tripping realistic optical illusions, as if the earth has split open and far below are rainbow-colored galaxies and supernovas.

Five Contemporary artist extraordinaire, especially minimalism. Paint a canvas blue, slap a price tag on it and off it goes. One of those artists who not-so-subtly paints obscenities or political “screw you” messages into his work.

Vanya Somber oil paintings of heavy, dark lighting with liquid smooth brushstrokes. Her pieces make the viewer feel as if they’re on the outside looking in, eavesdropping, observing from a distance, not really part of the painting but wishing they could be - a mother and her child bathed in warm, golden sunlight, partially hidden by a dull brown door. Or a happy couple in the soft blue glow of the kitchen at midnight as they dance hand in hand, viewed down the dark tunnel of a hallway.

Later on, for Diego, it was the gym. Plenty of opportunity for bondage. Had the perfect echo when Eudora got vocal. And it was just enough of a public space that there was a thrill of almost getting caught if anyone knocked on the door, looking for a late night gym session.

She only praises him now, tells him how good he is for her. He doesn’t believe it, but she hopes he will one day.

“Piece of shit,” Diego muttered, tossing the screwdriver on the floor.

“Honey, it’s just a crib,” Eudora said from the doorway. “It’s not supposed to stress you out like this.”

“I’m not stressed." He cringed at his snappish tone and glanced over his shoulder with an apologetic look.

Eudora raised her eyebrows, one hand on her rounded belly.

“Are you finished?” she said.

Diego ducked his head. “Sorry, babe. Didn’t mean to bite your head off. It’s…” He gestured to the pieces scattered all around him, nowhere near resembling a crib and he’d been at it for hours. “Allison said it was a no-brainer. Should have known that was a lie.”

“She probably used the instructions.” Eudora held up the pamphlet with MANUAL written on the front.

Diego didn’t bother with it. “I don’t need to be told what to do.”

He turned back to the crib, sorting the pieces in a logical crib layout. Eudora shook her head with a small, affectionate smile.

“Stubborn,” she mumbled.

Slowly, Eudora eased into the rocking chair by the window, one hand pressed to her lower back. Diego cast a sideways glance at her.

You’re hovering, Eudora would tell him, almost on a daily basis. But he couldn’t just sit back and watch her suffer through morning sickness, an aching back, swollen ankles and sleepless nights. He knew there wasn’t much he could do, it was simply part of the pregnancy, but at least he could put together a crib for her.

Or so he thought. Apparently, it wasn’t that easy.
