After Auschwitz and Ghetto Square and Schindler's factory on our trip to Poland, we were keen to put WWII behind us, so we went to see Dunkirk (?!) in a lovely art cinema off the main square in Krakow. A real feat of imagery, humanity, and art. And music. Such music. An amazing soundtrack by Hans Zimmer which has been much reflected on elsewhere but which is genuinely the engine of the piece. I thought the whole avoided sentimentality without being cool, I thought it told a simple story with admirable complexity, it was familiar (as a war film) but fresh in its devices and approach. Thrilling, powerful, emotional, sweeping. War films should be for all time. This was that.
